Pink Tutu Time Travel: Episode #625 - 1st January 1972! 🩰💖✨

Hello, darling! It's your fabulous, Derbyshire-born bestie Emma here, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travel! This month we're pirouetting back to a time when flared trousers were all the rage and disco was just beginning to make its sassy entrance: 1st January 1972!

My Outfit

As always, my sartorial choices are essential to the time travel process, and today, I'm looking positively glamorous. I'm sporting a stunning pink tutu, the colour so vibrant it could light up the whole of 1972. It's paired with a glittery, pale pink crop top that shimmers under the January sun, and my trusty hot pink stiletto heels. I may have borrowed a little sparkle from a drag queen of this era (more on that later), but hey, what's a bit of friendly borrowing between fellow drag sisters, right?

Time Travel Prep

I’m feeling a tad bit peckish this morning, but no worries – I've packed my trusty picnic basket filled with the essentials for a fabulous 1970s time travel adventure: a scone (to share, of course!), a pot of English Breakfast tea, and a little pot of that delicious pink peppermint confectionary you simply HAVE to have! It's all the sweetness a drag queen could need for a spot of time travelling, darling.

Where are we landing?

This month's trip is going to be exciting – we're landing smack dab in the heart of New York City! The Big Apple in the 1970s? It sounds positively fabulous. I've heard tales of drag balls being thrown in clubs like The Pyramid Club, with extravagant costumes, outlandish makeup, and enough feathers to rival a peacock in paradise! Can you imagine, my loves? This month's adventure is already making my heart flutter.

The Queen's Chronicles

As I step out of my pink time machine (just a shimmery little closet, darling, with a hint of pink glitter!), I see it – a sea of colourful personalities! The streets are alive with a joyous spirit, full of performers who push the boundaries of gender expression.

The drag scene is thriving! There's Divine, with his shocking pink lips, massive bouffant and cheeky attitude – absolutely fabulous! His performances are outlandishly funny, pushing those boundaries of acceptability with wild abandon. He even went on to appear in films like Pink Flamingos, which sounds… fascinating? But that's for another time!

Then we have Jackie Curtis, who effortlessly embodies the avant-garde. Her bold looks and playful performances were so different, she was practically pioneering camp long before it became the chic style we know and love today!

In the world of street drag, we have Jack Doroshow – a man of sheer brilliance and a stunning, dramatic presence! Imagine, if you will, his incredible, elegant creations, dripping with beads, sequins, and feathers, with their own kind of dramatic appeal.

A Little Trip to the Theatre

Of course, no time travel journey is complete without a show! This month, I've nabbed tickets to "The Cockettes," a truly radical theatrical experience. This drag ensemble was something truly unique – they were part drag performance, part performance art. The entire thing is a little offbeat, a touch eccentric, and wholly theatrical in the best way. It's certainly a night out that's guaranteed to make you laugh, cry, and raise your eyebrow in disbelief!

I've managed to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes peek into their rehearsals! Oh my heavens, their costumes are out of this world – colourful, decadent, and daring. The makeup – let's just say it's dramatic, with heavy mascara and vivid eye shadow, creating a beautiful kind of otherworldly beauty. This show, my darlings, is truly unlike anything you've seen before!

Shopping Spree Time!

As you can imagine, the pink in my heart needs satisfying! A visit to Bergdorf Goodman is a must! Oh darling, the fabrics, the hats, the SHOES! And you wouldn't believe it, but in a little boutique tucked away on a side street, I find a glorious pink velvet gown. This dress will surely bring an extra touch of pink to my future performances!

Let's Get This Party Started!

Speaking of performances, I found a fabulous show at a club called "The Mother". It's described as a disco nightclub that caters to drag queens and performers! Can you imagine? It's full of dazzling performances, incredible music and… well, enough sequins to make you dizzy!

In the end, it was like stepping into a world of dazzling entertainment. This world, in the 1970s, was an exciting, brave, and defiant world, celebrating individuality and individuality through the beauty and extravagance of drag. Oh my goodness, what a time to be alive!
