Darling dearies,
How absolutely divine to have you all back on www.pink-tutu.com for another captivating jaunt through drag history. I'm your resident pink-tutu-clad time-travelling queen, Emma, beaming in from Derbyshire. This month, my pink tutu whisked me back to the glittering, glam-tastic world of June 6th, 1972. Buckle up, sugar plums, as we embark on a trip through the era that paved the way for the fierce, fabulous queens of today!
This year, darling, I found myself amidst a kaleidoscope of dazzling drag scene. Let's face it, 1972 was a time of monumental shifts in society. And drag? Oh honey, it was evolving alongside, blooming like a rosebud in a hot house. My darling pink tutu was buzzing with excitement.
Firstly, honey, where can I even begin with New York City? Oh the drag shows! We had The Copa, the Latin Quarter, and the Village Gate. My pink tutu positively twirled with excitement just thinking about it! It was at the Copa that the legendary drag superstar Divine was strutting her stuff. Her look was...oh darling, just a delicious concoction of theatricality and humor. I could only dream of having her level of fabulous! And let’s not forget the other icon of the time, Jackie Curtis, captivating audiences with her own signature blend of quirky charm. She really knew how to work a stage!
And don’t think I wasn’t paying attention to the underground scene! Oh honey, The Mineshaft was pumping with the hottest drag talent in NYC. Drag shows at The Mineshaft were notoriously campy, a perfect breeding ground for some of the biggest names in drag today. It's hard not to get totally swept up in the excitement of it all, just imagining those drag pioneers performing under the neon lights!
But darling, my pink tutu didn't just stay in NYC. My magical tutu spun me over to England, where I caught "Oh! Calcutta!," a musical which was one of the first to feature full-frontal nudity, making it both exciting and controversial at the time. It opened a dialogue about sex, freedom, and taboos, with drag and queer culture leading the charge.
The Savoy Theatre in London was also showcasing another captivating production - "Godspell". This musical with its bright costumes and contemporary music became a symbol of counterculture, and featured a fabulous cast, which often included talented drag queens. Can you imagine, sugar? Theatricality and "Godspell"... what a winning combo!
As you can see, darlings, the 6th of June in 1972 was an explosion of talent, change, and pure drag excellence. Oh, how I wish I could have gone to The Mineshaft! sigh Just imagine the glamorous drag performances happening all over the world in 1972 - a melting pot of campy costumes, daring makeup, and performers challenging societal norms. These pioneers dared to be themselves and sparked a wave of change.
Now, it’s time for a fashion break, my darlings. We all know, pink and feathers are a quintessential combination in drag. But did you know the most popular style for dancers in the 1970s? Leotards with ballet skirts! The delicate tulle of ballet skirts in pale pink? I'm simply in heaven, darlings. Imagine that paired with a pair of those chunky platform shoes. The glam, the style, and that pink tutu, oh it’s the perfect look for time travelling to this time!
Now darlings, I am going to end with a sweet treat – this fabulous, little fashion advice, just for you, and a lovely reminder to always be your flamboyant self:
- Get your sequins ready: Shine bright like a disco ball!
- Rock your feathers: A dash of feather trim takes any outfit from fab to extra!
- Embrace the glam: 1972 was about owning your style, even if it meant breaking norms.
- Let the pink take you over: Let's face it, pink always takes the cake, whether on stage or on the streets. Don't be afraid to channel your inner pink-tutu-loving ballerina!
Darling, this concludes our dazzling trip through time to June 6th, 1972! Remember, it’s never too late to unleash your inner diva, even if your tutu’s not magical (yet!) - keep checking in to www.pink-tutu.com, my darlings. Stay glamorous, be fearless, and always wear a tutu!
See you in next month's journey through time, dearies!
Love and sparkles,
Emma xxx
