Oh darling, get ready for a splash of pink! This is Emma, your resident time-traveling ballerina drag queen from the depths of Derbyshire, bringing you all the fabulous gossip and glitz of September 9th, 1972, straight to your screens, exclusively on pink-tutu.com.
I swear, darling, this time traveling tutu is more glamorous than ever! Honestly, I just can't believe I'm living the dream. Just a simple twirl and BAM! I'm transported to the past, ready to immerse myself in all the iconic, historical drag moments.
This month, dear readers, I've touched down in the roaring 70s - a period, I have to say, absolutely brimming with revolutionary drag. From the dawn of disco to the blossoming of underground queer communities, the stage was set for truly ground-breaking talent. And honestly, darling, I canāt tell you how much I wanted to snatch a sparkly top from a vintage store ā or heck, just raid the whole thing!
But my mission for this particular journey was simple ā discover what our fabulous queens were up to on September 9th, 1972, and share all the gossip with you lovelies.
And guess what? I was utterly delighted!
Firstly, I stumbled upon this little gem - a newspaper article mentioning "Drag Queen Showdown: A Battle for the Crown in New York City!" Oh, the intrigue! The article teased a battle royale between legendary drag figures at The Mineshaft - the iconic New York City drag venue - with rumors flying of jaw-dropping costumes and fierce lip sync battles.
"This is just screaming 'legendary night out'!" I said to myself. And guess what? It just got even better. It seems there was a secret gathering for transgender artists in a basement club in San Francisco. The article just called it a āget-together for individuals of the transgender movement,ā but I reckon, based on what Iāve read about this period, this had to be some fabulous drag, right? I've always dreamed of being a fly on the wall at one of those legendary gatherings! Just imagine the costumes, the music, and the sheer joy of seeing queer people just embracing their true selves - absolutely divine!
The rest of the day was just as thrilling, though a tad quieter than those fierce, historical events. I went on a little shopping spree in the village, grabbed a fabulous pink dress in a vintage boutique, just for the heck of it. Then, for a delicious midday treat, I indulged in some of the tastiest donuts the world had ever seen, and guess what? Pink ones too! It was a delicious journey through time!
Of course, all my travelling would be utterly pointless without some drag shows. So, I booked a front-row seat at a fantastic venue in Los Angeles and settled in to experience all the dazzling costumes and enchanting music. I had an absolute ball - from the electrifying energy of the audience to the exquisite grace of the performers. Thereās something so truly special about seeing drag performed in such a different time and place - a glimpse into another era, into another world, filled with creativity and flamboyance.
The best part, darling? The show I watched felt more than just entertainment, more than just fashion. The drag I saw in that dimly lit, LA venue was pure revolution ā the sheer audacity of dressing up as a woman and embracing every inch of your queer self. I got a little misty-eyed, you know? A proud moment reflecting on all those pioneers of drag who helped to build the foundations for everything we love about the art form today.
Oh, and darling, donāt forget to check out the "Drag in 1972: A Time of Bold Transformationā exhibit on pink-tutu.com. Itās bursting with captivating imagery and historical tidbits from September 9th, 1972, along with some insights from my research on how drag was shaping up around the world at that very time!
As for me, darling, Iām off to continue exploring the captivating world of 70s drag, because honestly, who wouldn't want to spend some time in a dazzling disco? After all, the seventies were filled with so much glitter, boldness, and individuality that you can't help but want to throw on a sequin top and embrace the energy of the era! And darling, I canāt wait to show you all the hidden gems and sparkling secrets I uncover, and how these historical moments inspire the art of drag today.
But darling, donāt let the spotlight leave you - make sure you pop on your favourite pink tutu and strut your stuff. Remember, it's never too late to add a dash of pink to your day, and as for me, Iāll be back next month with another incredible journey into drag history. Stay fabulous and keep twirling!
Love always,
