Hello, darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling blogger, Emma, and today we’re taking a little trip back to 10th October 1973. Buckle up your best stilettos, grab your feather boas, and prepare to be absolutely dazzled because today’s blog is gonna be one for the books!
A Drag Queen's Dream Come True!
Right, as usual, let’s talk travel! My latest magical, tutu-powered jaunt landed me smack bang in the heart of… (dramatic pause)…. New York City! Now, I may be a Derbyshire girl, but even I know New York is the Big Apple, the melting pot of all things amazing, and the centre of the drag universe!
Oh, darling! To describe the joy of stepping out of my time machine and straight into a vintage NYC drag bar, is practically impossible! Think smoky lighting, pulsating music, and a stage overflowing with incredible performers, their dazzling costumes catching the stage lights like a disco ball in a storm. And me? I mean, naturally, my pink tutu was drawing all the right attention! Everyone just wanted a touch of that glittery goodness. I mean, have you seen a sparkly pink tutu like mine? It's practically a work of art, a shimmering masterpiece!
Discovering the Queen of All Queens
My first stop? Well, where else could I go? I had to check out The Cockettes! These fabulous ladies were rocking a bohemian, avant-garde drag style that I could only dream of achieving back in the day! It was pure drag artistry, with elaborate costumes, campy theatrics, and this wonderfully chaotic energy that felt just like a vibrant, pink-tutu-wearing dream!
You see, darlings, the Cockettes were truly groundbreaking. They challenged norms, defied expectations, and paved the way for the incredible drag artists of today. I just love seeing their influence on the drag scene even now. I even spotted a few of their amazing outfits, with a beautiful array of feathers, sequins and glitter, of course. Oh, I just adore how much drag has evolved since then. It’s like witnessing the development of art, and it’s just so fascinating to watch!
The Queen's Journey: Shopping, Style, and More Shopping!
Now, what’s a trip to NYC without a little retail therapy? After the show, it was time to shop 'til I dropped! Thankfully, I’ve got enough space in my time-traveling pink tutu for an outfit or two. Just the thought of all the amazing vintage clothes and accessories I could find got my heart pumping!
You see, in 1973, there were just so many amazing little boutiques, shops brimming with sparkly delights, and it was pure joy to just get lost in the maze of racks and shelves. Imagine me, twirling in my pink tutu, the air full of fabric, sequins and the sweet scent of perfume - it’s honestly a beautiful memory I cherish! I came away with some stunning vintage sequins, feathers and beads – a treasure trove of costume material that I can’t wait to play with back in my own time.
And the World Keeps Spinning…
You know, sometimes when you’re time travelling, you get a glimpse of the big picture. And in 1973, the world was spinning with a whole lot of changes and excitement.
The gay rights movement was gaining momentum, and there was a palpable energy in the air - a thirst for equality, for change, and a powerful sense of unity within the queer community.
And I know what you’re thinking. It's true - this isn't the time for a fashion-focused blogger to shy away from those hard facts, honey. While drag shows continued to be a safe haven, it was also a world of challenges and sometimes even prejudice. But it’s important to remember, every era faces its obstacles. The important thing is that we keep fighting for the things that we believe in and use our platforms for good, just like drag has been doing since day one.
Back to the Future
So there you have it, my darlings! Another wild trip through time with my faithful pink tutu. As I always say, life's too short for anything less than fabulous and there is nothing more incredible than discovering how far drag has come and the influence it has on the world. Let's make it a a bit more pink in your life today, and perhaps grab your own tutu and start rocking the look!
Until next time,
Emma,
xx
