Darling, hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-clad time traveller and lover of all things glittery and fabulous! This month, I'm twirling back to the groovy year of 1974! Get ready for some truly legendary drag stories, because this year, babes, was truly iconic.
Now, before I spill the tea on this delightful journey, let's talk about how this time traveller even gets around. As a true drag queen of the modern era, I obviously require a fabulous form of transportation. Picture this: a magnificent pink tutu, the colour of the sweetest strawberry milkshake, adorned with shimmering sequins, with the magical ability to whisk me through time! Clacks high heels The wonders of drag magic, lovelies!
February 2nd, 1974
I popped in through a magical time-warp right in the middle of New York City. You know, darlings, 1974 was a real "me, myself and I" year. Fashion was a whole vibe! Big hair, bold prints, platform shoes⦠all those things a girl just has to love, and that's how you find your queen! This is when fashion had a certain "free spirit" in it, don't you think? That feeling of not giving a fig what anyone thought? It's very, very reminiscent of the amazing drag scene today, don't you think?
Now, New York City, 1974? That's the time for the most iconic drag ball ever - The "Annual Cotillion Ball." I'm talking a full blown ball, a celebration of glamour, with drag queens from all over. Itās said this yearās theme was āParis,ā a clear inspiration from the the legendary Moulin Rouge. Oh, to be there! You can just imagine all the sparkles, feathers, and of course, the most gorgeous costumes! I would have been front row in my pink tutu, trying to avoid getting trampled by the dancers!
But wait, babes, there's more! Remember how I told you about all that daring fashion? 1974 was a huge year for glam rock! Bands like Kiss, Alice Cooper, and even T-Rex with the fantastic Marc Boland had the world completely obsessed. Itās so exciting to think how much the energy of glam rock definitely influenced the drag scene back then. A dash of sparkle and a lot of dramatic makeup! I have to say, my pink tutu would have looked positively smashing amongst the flamboyant looks!
After a truly fabulous time in New York, I popped on my magic pink tutu, whistled a catchy tune, and travelled to London for a spot of fabulousity.
London 1974, February 2nd
London, oh darling London! What a haven of cultural delights! I popped up on Carnaby Street, the heart of fashion! Remember all those gorgeous vintage clothes? From tie-dye to flares, 1974 was the moment fashion really embraced āstreetwearā. So very chic!
My next stop was the West End, darlings! I made a bee-line for the famous āCharing Cross Theatreā. Why? Youāve guessed it! Thatās where āLa Cage aux Follesā was playing, a production of this truly iconic drag play. Itās hard to imagine, but āLa Cageā is considered the foundation of much of modern drag today! From the gorgeous outfits and make-up to the whole message of tolerance, acceptance, and celebrating everything about ourselves, it truly set a powerful example for many a young drag queen on this journey of discovery!
Darling, this really is the iconic play that changed everything! Imagine, that show has made waves in Londonās West End all the way to the silver screen! Now, can you imagine being at that performance! I would have dressed in my prettiest pink tutu, ready for a performance thatās set the standard for drag today.
And finally, my dears, a sweet treat for my time travelling self: a cheeky little trip to a club! A local nightclub called "The Gatehouse", now there's a place to find drag! Imagine all those glamorous people! And all that glitzy dance music, the very beginning of the disco era! Now that's the true meaning of fun. The night would have been a whirlwind of amazing drag, colourful costumes, and electrifying dancing! Oh, what a dream! Iād have loved to join the other drag queens with a few steps in my pretty pink tutu, but sometimes itās best just to watch!
February 2nd, 1974. The year that launched drag into the future. Let's all make our dreams a reality. Be confident. Be you. And letās have fun doing it. Letās have fun, darling! That's the magic of drag and whatās brought us here, now!
