Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels! I’m Emma, your favourite Derbyshire drag queen blogger, and it's time for another month's adventure! Get your feather boas at the ready, and prepare to have your wigs blown back with my fabulous findings from February 2nd, 1977.
This month, my magical pink tutu took me on a whirlwind trip back to the glittering days of disco and, let me tell you, darling, things were truly shimmering. It seems the universe heard my pleas for some glamour and a touch of that iconic '70s flair! Oh, to have been in New York at this time!
From Disco Fever to a Glamorous Night OutStepping out of my time machine, my sequined handbag practically bursting with excitement, I felt the electrifying energy of New York's most famous drag venue, The Saint. This, my darlings, is the birthplace of modern drag, and the pulse of New York’s fabulous underground scene. You simply cannot imagine the thrill, the raw energy of the drag community buzzing around me!
And there, on stage, with a microphone held like a sparkling wand, was the legendary Divine, looking absolutely sensational in her signature glitz. Imagine, a woman wearing a huge wig, a dress covered in sequins and beads, all accompanied by her signature raspy voice! The crowd went wild. Their sheer enthusiasm and joy was infectious!
A Look Back at the '70s GlamRemember, my loves, this was before the time of Instagram and online blogs like mine. The community thrived through personal experiences and word of mouth. Imagine, a glamorous time where drag was accessible only if you knew where to find it, a truly underground treasure!
While Divine was certainly a headliner, there was another incredible performer that night, Marsha P. Johnson. She’s one of the queens of Stonewall, who bravely stood up for LGBTQ+ rights. You could tell she was someone special. Marsha radiated warmth and energy - an absolute queen in the making, paving the way for generations of performers.
Discovering the Queen's Favourite ShopsI knew my trip to New York wouldn't be complete without some retail therapy. What would a drag queen do without shopping, right? Oh, my darlings, what an exciting shopping experience!
My first stop was a haven of glamorous garments: The Costume Center on 28th street. It's no longer there, but the sheer excitement I felt was pure magic. It was a place where drag queens, actors, and artists could find their ultimate sartorial expressions, full of fabrics, feathers, and costumes that looked like they belonged to a magical fairyland! It felt like a symphony of silk, a tapestry of textures just waiting to be brought to life!
Feeling The Thrill of the '70s SceneFrom there, my journey led me to the backstreets of the city. Drag in the 70s was not confined to big clubs. The streets were full of flamboyant individuals, dressed to the nines, living their best lives! They wore their hearts on their sleeves, and the joy of their self-expression was so vibrant.
This, my loves, is why I want to remind you that the magic of drag lives not only on stage but within ourselves! Embrace your individuality, wear your hearts on your sleeves, and remember: A pink tutu and a confident attitude are all you need to create your own dazzling drag world!
The Power of Community - Inspiring Us TodayAs I watched the world of New York drag unfold, I knew my mission, darlings. My time machine and my beloved pink tutu were not meant only for myself but to help me understand the importance of history and how it empowers the future.
As drag queens in 1977 fought for visibility and equality, their passion reminds us how powerful collective spirit can be. Let their courage inspire you. Be fierce, be kind, be unapologetically you. And wear a pink tutu with pride, darlings. That's my legacy, to unite everyone in pink!
That's all for this month, but tune in next time for another whirlwind time travel adventure! Until then, keep it glamorous, my loves, and never stop being you! Remember, my door is always open for requests - let me know where you’d like to see me journey next on Pink-Tutu.com!
