Hello, my darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling drag queen! Welcome to another fabulous post on Pink-Tutu.com. August 8th is upon us, and with a whirl of my sparkly, magical tutu, I'm whisking us back to a dragtastic day in 1977.
Packing My Pink Case:
Now, I always like to look my best for a time-travelling adventure. Today's look is a nod to the disco era, my dears. Picture it: a voluminous pink tutu (naturally), a sparkly crop top that screams '70s glamour, and my signature pink feather boa, as big and fabulous as you like. Don't forget my ruby red lips and those dramatic winged liner eyes! Oh, and my platform heels? They're sparkling pink, of course! I’m feeling truly fabulous, and I can't wait to see what 1977 holds for me!
Arriving in the Neon City:
The first thing I notice upon arriving is the vibe – disco beats pulse through the air, the streets are filled with bright neon colours and big, bouncy hair. New York City, 1977 - what a scene! And speaking of scenes, I have to share a bit of a fashion disaster! There are too many people sporting clothes with far too many sequins. Honestly, it's overwhelming! It’s enough to give even the most glamorous queen the sparkles. But hey, let's be honest, it's all part of the disco fever.
Drag Queens & Divine:
You simply couldn’t talk about 1977 without mentioning the divine Divine! Her outrageous drag performances are iconic and, I must confess, are truly inspiring. Imagine – drag as an art form that pushes boundaries and makes a statement. I am thrilled to be here in a time when drag is starting to break through into mainstream culture!
A Night at the Theater:
After some time soaking in the disco energy and exploring some incredible shops – darling, the fashion in New York was amazing – I head to the New York Shakespeare Festival’s Public Theater for a drag extravaganza! I can't share specifics on the show (spoilers!) but let me tell you, it was a roaring success! Imagine – a night of amazing talent, hilarious jokes, and pure theatrical spectacle! I even spotted some familiar faces – Marsha Hunt, Sherry Vine – pioneers of the drag scene, ladies who paved the way for all of us!
The History We Must Celebrate
You see, my dears, a bit of drag history: in the late '70s, drag performances began appearing more regularly in mainstream theatre venues. This is a turning point! It wasn't all glitter and glamour though; sadly, the LGBTQ+ community was still facing prejudice and discrimination. But hey, those of us with pink tutus and big hearts have a responsibility to celebrate those who paved the way, those who dared to dream big, those who used drag as a way to break free.
My Tutu Thoughts:
What a time to be alive, right? This trip to 1977 reminded me of something that I always knew – drag isn’t just about performance, it’s about finding your tribe, celebrating self-expression, and using your platform to challenge the norm. We're not afraid to stand out, my dears! And to any aspiring drag queens out there – embrace your individuality, find your style, and be bold with it!
Final Thoughts, My Dears:
Until next month's journey into the colourful world of drag history, don’t forget to stay fabulous! I want to see all of you embracing your inner fabulousness – wearing pink tutus, being confident, and celebrating our beautiful community. You are a masterpiece, so let your light shine bright. See you soon, dears, and keep checking back on Pink-Tutu.com for more of your monthly dose of drag history!
Yours truly,
Emma xxx
