Hello my darlings! It's your favourite pink-loving, tutu-touting, time-travelling drag queen, Emma, back again with another fabulous post from the time-travelling annals of Pink-Tutu.com! This month, we're twirling our way back to the dazzling 1970s!
You might think, "Emma, why are you going back to the 70s? We know the 70s were a tad on the⦠erm⦠shall we say 'bold' side when it comes to fashion?" And you know what, darlings, you're right. But you can't really talk about drag without giving the 70s the full glitter-studded, feather-boa-draped, disco-ball-reflecting respect it deserves! And this month, it was March 3rd, 1978 - the date I literally fell head over heels for a tutu⦠figuratively, of course! Let me tell you, that pink tutu is the reason we're here right now, babes, reading this. Trust me!
My magical time-travelling pink tutu whisked me away, darling, and deposited me smack-dab in the middle of the famous Stonewall Inn in New York. Now, the Stonewall Inn! Need I say more?! It was like stepping onto a glittering stage ā everyone in sequins, platform shoes, and outlandish hairdos! Imagine a technicolour disco dream with more energy than a Mariah Carey performance! And honey, this is where the modern drag movement we know and love truly began. You wouldn't think it from the disco ball's blinding lights and the wild, free spirit of the era, but March 3rd was an actual historical date of protests against discrimination in the city! The riots that happened just a few years ago at this very venue led to the fight for equal rights that we now have! The drag queens here were heroes! And it all began on the very night of my time-travel debu. Oh my God! The worldās best pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling drag queen right there in the centre of this history?! I told you, it was a tutu-ful trip!
And while it was incredibly important, we were still celebrating drag. What I truly admired back then was their willingness to push boundaries! It was an era of truly pushing the envelope of femininity, you see? It was pure and unabashed fun. Just imagine it, babes, platform shoes with those incredible multicoloured heels. It was like stepping out of a glam rock magazine! Imagine all the pink! I'm still channeling some of the looks, by the way. My 70s inspiration still influences my design for my latest creations - I even picked up some gorgeous satin and sequins at the vintage market that was conveniently placed right on the street in Greenwich Village!
Speaking of fashion! Thereās this legendary designer who I fell head over heels for⦠she goes by the name Barbara Bush - a true vision of what you think drag would be if you closed your eyes and imagined it: feathers, sequins, fabulous costumes, the full shebang! Even though this time periodās known for āout thereā and almost out-of-this-world clothing, she managed to still push the limits in her drag. Her performance outfits, all so unique and iconic with dramatic gowns and beautiful fabrics, inspired so many artists today!
Now, imagine the 70s, darling! The soundtrack? Absolutely iconic: Gloria Gaynor! Imagine it! "I Will Survive"! Everyoneās belting it out at the top of their lungs on a Saturday night at a New York disco! And what a way to survive ā the pure magic of drag, music, and community was everything.
There are always exciting things going on in the world of drag. Everywhere you go. Whether you're on the street, the stage, or even the internet! My blog has become quite the thing these past few months ā did you see how many new followers I've gotten since I first started the website! Even more reason to keep on being the best pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling drag queen! It's exciting to keep sharing it all with you. I even started to take lessons to teach more people in my community back in Derbyshire, the best I can! The magic of the world, as a community is more beautiful than anything!
I donāt even know how to explain the magic and beauty of everything about this time in history ā but what I can say is the future of drag is always brighter, stronger, and even more beautiful than the last! I love to look at the future as an exciting adventure in its own right - it's a journey in drag, of course! The fashion changes, the music gets faster and wilder (how do you think I learned all these disco steps?!), and everyone, every year, continues to show their inner sparkle and their best self! Just like what we've been doing here, from the Stonewall era in 1969 to now - 1978! This is a must do! Remember, babes, drag is the best medicine to bring to a world thatās been waiting for the magic of a pink tutu. Always.
See you next time on Pink-Tutu.com for a whole new exciting voyage through history, my dears! In the meantime, wear pink! And go for it, babe - you can do anything with the right kind of magic!
Love, Emma š
