Hello, my darlings! Welcome to another month, another pink-tutu-fied journey through #DragQueenHistory! Your girl Emma here, and I'm feeling a touch of dramatic flair today โ May the 5th, 1978, has so much in store, it's almost giving Cinderella at the ball! ๐ โจ
Today, I'm heading back to the glittery year of 1978! Now, remember those disco balls that everyone seemed to have at home? Yeah, those were a huge thing back then โ just like drag! The 70s was a truly fabulous time for drag โ a glorious melting pot of outrageous, creative, and utterly groundbreaking expressions! ๐
But enough with the chatter! The clock is ticking, my dearie, so it's time for me to climb into my shimmering pink tutu โ it's going to be another wild time-travel ride! ๐
#DragQueenHistory โ From the Derbyshire Peaks to the Glittery Streets of 1978:
I always get such a rush when the time-travel energy kicks in โ like the fizziest Prosecco in the world! One moment Iโm here in my cosy little studio, admiring my tutu collection (every shade of pink imaginable, naturally!), the next Iโm swept back in time to May 5th, 1978! Iโve landed smack-dab in the middle of bustling Times Square, New York City โ and oh, the glamour! The sheer volume of sequins, feathers, and platforms, my dearie, it's positively *exhilarating!
Let's face it, thereโs no place like New York City when it comes to witnessing iconic drag performances! The iconic "The Cockettes", with their larger than life theatrical style, were at their peak โ truly a revolution in drag! But hereโs the thing, they were more than just drag queens. They were, and I say this with a flourish of my feathered fan, artists โ bringing their radical artistic ideas to the world, from their bohemian hippie vibes to the truly mind-blowing psychedelic fashion! โจ๐
But New York was just the beginning, my darling! The call of #DragQueenHistory took me around the globe! I had to see it all: San Francisco, with its captivating "Cockettes" performances, Los Angeles, where "The Angels" were changing the face of drag through their powerful feminist messages โ yes, drag was a movement, a powerful and impactful force that redefined gender roles!
And, believe you me, they were fashion statements too! Think bright colours, chunky platforms, shiny sequins galore โ thatโs the fashion I live for! I mean, have you seen those feather boas, those oversized wigs? ๐ฎ๐
Even back then, my love for tutus knew no boundaries. They weren't just an iconic piece in ballet โ they were a powerful symbol of femininity, of elegance, of daring and playful defiance. Of course, my tutu game in the 1970s was top notch! ๐๐
But itโs not all about glamorous performances and fabulous fashion! Letโs not forget the challenges of being a drag queen, even back in 1978. Discrimination, prejudice, the fear of being "other" โ it was a daily struggle. The queens in those days fought for the right to be seen, to be heard, and they did so with style! They are true pioneers of LGBTQ+ representation โ truly legendary icons!
Shopping Spree for my Drag Wardrobe!
With my trip back to the fabulous 70s in the bag, itโs time to get my shop on, darling! You see, Iโm a firm believer in that good old fashioned โshop localโ movement โ itโs all about supporting independent drag artists! Thatโs how I gather inspiration for my fabulous drag looks, which you all know, keep changing and evolving with every trip back in time.
My most recent discovery: a breathtaking store called โHenri Bendelโ โ oh, honey, itโs an absolute dream for any drag queen! Imagine a paradise of colourful sequins, shimmery fabrics, the most spectacular headbands โ enough to turn heads, all of them! ๐ต๐
And, as always, a new adventure means a new tutu! This time, Iโm adding a gorgeous, cherry-pink tulle confection, covered in glistening sequins, of course! Because when it comes to pink tutus, there is never enough!
Final Thoughts, darling:
I have to say, my 1978 adventure has truly left me inspired. Those pioneers were fearless, their creative energy was, dare I say it, a force! Itโs a constant reminder to me to embrace the extraordinary, to shine with authenticity, to be bold, bold in every sense of the word, in pink, with glitter! ๐
So, until next month, my darling, donโt be afraid to step out in a tutu! Let your fabulous self be seen! Remember, everyone can be a drag queen, every day, every single moment! Just add a dash of flair, a generous pinch of sequins, and of course, a good dollop of pink โ and go!
Until next time,
Emma โจ๐
