Hello darlings! It's your girl, Emma, here, fresh from a fabulous trip back to 1978, courtesy of my magical, pink tutu time machine. You'll never believe the scene I stumbled upon! This month, let's whisk ourselves away to a time where bell bottoms were the height of fashion and the world was starting to really embrace the power of drag. And trust me, dearies, there's no better place to experience that than The Copa Room in New York City.
I arrived at The Copa, wearing a brand new pink tulle confection that made the glitterball blush. Let me tell you, darlings, The Copa had that authentic, glamorous vibe that still sends shivers down my spine. It's not the kind of place you'd get your glitter on cheap, and let me tell you, I saw some real queens in full regalia there.
And oh darling, I could feel the electrifying energy of the room as I watched the divine Miss Penny, The Soul of Drag, grace the stage with her infectious energy! Now, Miss Penny wasn't just any drag queen; she was a true showstopper. Her act? Absolutely iconic! Think shimmying, sassy show tunes, playful banter with the audience, and enough sequins to blind the whole room. This was drag in its truest form, folks - unadulterated, dazzling entertainment!
But my adventures didn't stop there, my loves! It turned out, I was lucky enough to stumble into a "Queens On the Move" event – a spectacular showcase celebrating the art of drag in the heart of Harlem. From the dazzling stage to the glamorous queens who were truly embodying the essence of what drag was all about, it was an eye-opener and a beautiful celebration of inclusivity, individuality and simply being your fabulous self.
And here's what I learned about 1978, darling. Drag wasn't just a fad, it was a movement. There was a spirit of fierce rebellion and fierce beauty swirling around, and The Copa, the "Queens on the Move" events, and the vibrant, dynamic drag community in Harlem became the stages where these dreams were taking flight. It was raw, it was powerful, and it truly embodied the spirit of our drag world.
Now, back to my present time, darlings, and how you can get involved with all this glorious history! First, you gotta make sure you're rocking a pink tutu. Trust me, dearies, it's a universal language in the world of drag. It screams “fierce,” "fabulous,” and "let’s celebrate!" Plus, if you catch me at my next performance, we'll have a fabulous chat about drag, its history, and what we can learn from those who paved the way! And who knows? Maybe even a sprinkle of magic from my pink tutu, who knows?!

Love, sparkles and sequins,
Emma
