Pink Tutu Travels: A Blast from the Past - January 1st, 1979! (Post #709)

Hello, my darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveler and, naturally, self-proclaimed Queen of Pink. It's a new year and a new month, so I'm practically bursting with excitement to tell you about my latest adventures through time. You're going to want to grab your teacup, put on your favourite sequined frock (preferably pink, naturally), and get ready to be whisked back to January 1st, 1979, darlings. I mean, just imagine, you could be in New York at the very first performance of "The Cockettes" (we’ll get to them in a moment), a revolutionary drag group, and experience the sheer genius of these trailblazers firsthand. Who wouldn't want to relive that magic?!

Now, this time, I landed with a bit of a bump. See, my trusty pink tutu has a habit of taking me places without a map - pure drag-tastic excitement, I always say! It landed me, in the heart of bustling London, where, upon gazing through the steamy windows of a local cafe, I found myself in a veritable time capsule! The walls were lined with old posters, the soundtrack was pure glam-rock, and everyone, even the fellas, were rocking a look that was part rock-and-roll and part disco, with an added dash of… you guessed it, pink! It felt like stepping straight onto the set of an old 70s glam film.

My trusty pink tutu whisked me, not once but twice this month! To New York, I flew (no, that wasn’t an exaggeration, darling!), and it was quite the trip! Imagine New York, all gritty and exciting, pulsating with the energy of the 70s, filled with artists and performers ready to push boundaries. And this was the year the legendary "The Cockettes" put on their debut performance in a small downtown venue! They were drag queens, singers, dancers, and avant-garde performers who reimagined drag and theater, blending high-fashion glamour with a rebellious attitude and an abundance of sequins. These icons literally reinvented what drag could be - their performances were legendary. The world hasn't been the same since, darlings, and I'm so grateful to have witnessed them. Their impact on drag, fashion, and theater is undeniable. And guess what, even their performances incorporated those fabulous 70s-esque styles with a distinctly glamorous edge. Oh, it was a sight to behold!

Now, here's a tidbit about that glam-rock disco fashion we all loved. It's a fashion history lesson wrapped in sequins! Everything in 1979 was about boldness and creativity. Think high platform shoes, glittery shirts, skin-tight pants (hello, bell bottoms!), and a whole lotta hair! I even caught myself gravitating towards an outfit with a metallic top, hot pants, and a pair of disco boots. (Yes, the kind with platform soles and a 10-inch heel!) The look felt as fresh then as it does now, darlings. It was truly an electrifying fashion scene, just like what you see on the runways today! Oh, don't forget the feathers, boas, and that touch of bling!

I have to say, 1979 really showed me that the essence of drag - bold self-expression, unapologetic glamour, and creativity pushing boundaries - never truly goes out of style! And, of course, in my own travels, it all comes back to pink.

Oh, darlings! I nearly forgot! Do you know how I fund all my pink-tutu time-travel shenanigans? With fabulous drag performances, of course! And this year is brimming with excitement. My next gig? The legendary "Queen's Ball" in Sheffield, hosted by none other than the illustrious Miss Peaches. It's a chance to see the best and brightest of the Derbyshire drag scene showcase their talent, and of course, I can't miss it! It's also the perfect place to inspire even more queens to embrace their own pink tutu - a touch of magical sparkle for everyone! I am here to empower every queen to shine with their own fabulous personality! And maybe, just maybe, that inspiration will take some of them on their own, fabulous journey through time.

As a bonus for all you delightful readers of www.pink-tutu.com, I have compiled a guide of things to look out for if you're seeking 70s glam-drag inspo for your next performance:

  • Go bold with your colours! It's 1979! Neon, glitz, and sparkle!
  • * Embrace that big hair.* Think glam rock, high bouffant, the more the merrier!
  • Play with textures! Feathers, lace, silk, fur (faux of course), glitter - don't be afraid to get creative with your materials, darlings!
  • Remember, every performance is a masterpiece! Let your creativity shine through - wear that statement piece with pride and let it carry you to stardom, honey!

So there you have it, darlings, my fabulous journey through time in January of 1979! As we move forward into a brand new year, don't be afraid to explore the wild world of fashion, embrace your unique self-expression, and most importantly, add a splash of pink into your own life. It's not just about colour, it's about bringing your individuality and style into everything you do!

Love and pink kisses,

Emma xx
