Pink Tutu Time Travels: 711 - March 3rd 1979: Disco Fever & the Dawn of a Drag Dynasty!

Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, the only blog that brings you the most glamorous moments of drag history - and that's no drag, honey! I'm Emma, your resident pink-loving, tutu-wearing, time-traveling ballerina, and today, we're whipping our way back to March 3rd, 1979! Get ready for sequins, disco balls, and enough glitter to blind a whole ballroom!

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Emma, 1979? Was it a good look? Were the skirts even voluminous enough?" Well, darlings, let me tell you, 1979 was the year disco fever truly reached its peak! And what goes with disco better than a stunning drag queen?

As my fabulous time-traveling pink tutu swished me back through the years, I found myself in the heart of New York City. Imagine, darlings, the vibrant energy! I strutted down Broadway, catching the shimmering lights reflecting off the massive skyscrapers, and I just knew I was going to have a ball. My trusty vintage copy of "Backstage" (with the amazing Divine gracing the cover, naturally) gave me all the intel on what was happening. Turns out, on this very night, there was a legendary show happening at the notorious nightclub "The Peppermint Lounge."

My heart beat with excitement! Oh, how I wished I could turn my magical tutu into a stunningly feathered disco outfit! You see, darlings, the "Peppermint Lounge" wasn't just any old bar. It was a true institution! This was the place for drag in the seventies, the melting pot of creative talent, the hub of everything fabulous. Just imagine - Diana Ross herself was a regular! Can you believe it?

Inside the lounge, it was electric! The place pulsated with energy and vibrant life. Think flashing lights, pulsating music, and every drag queen you've ever dreamed of! Oh, I could feel my excitement bubbling over! The stage, dripping in glamour, was the central point of all attention, with performers, their faces painted masterpieces, belting out disco hits and dazzling the audience. It was a true testament to the transformative power of drag. It was liberation! Freedom! And a truly inspiring night, if I ever saw one.

My journey, though, wouldn't be complete without experiencing the drag scene elsewhere. A hop on the time-traveling tutu later, I found myself at "The Saint," another hotbed of drag in San Francisco. And believe me, darling, there's no place like it in the world for a vibrant drag queen to find her groove!

This bar was, well, just pure magic! I watched performers take the stage, unleashing a flurry of feather boas, sequined dresses, and powerful vocals! A kaleidoscope of glitter, laughter, and sheer joie de vivre - I'd be lying if I said my heart wasn't racing.

"The Saint," back then, was a haven for creativity, where drag was truly embraced for its bold expression and rebellious energy. It was where the drag scene was pushing boundaries, crafting a bold new aesthetic that was about more than just entertainment - it was about expression. A drag show back then wasn't just a show, it was an artform.

Oh, how I wanted to hop onto that stage, dance alongside those fabulous drag queens! If my tutu wouldn't let me do it then, well, I'll be sure to show it off there on my next trip back in time, darling!

But as always, time is always tickin', and so I needed to take myself back to Derbyshire, leaving all that sparkle and glamour behind. But before I zipped myself back to the present day, let me share with you my take-aways:

1. Drag was more than just performance - it was liberation!

Whether in New York, San Francisco or, (as we shall explore in another post) even little old London, drag queens were defying the norms, showcasing their incredible creativity and unique individuality, challenging those around them. I felt empowered watching these brave queens embrace their true selves, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of drag icons.

2. The power of music!

Music played such an essential part in the magic of drag. Imagine the electrifying atmosphere in those bars! Those groovy disco beats really set the tone, inspiring dance floor joy and, more importantly, a sense of shared community.

3. Glitter, glitter, and more glitter!

It goes without saying! If we want to discuss the history of drag, we must acknowledge its connection to dazzling looks! Just imagining those extravagant, flamboyant costumes, those mesmerizing makeup masterpieces - you'd need a mirror larger than life itself to even begin to contain the spectacle of it all.

Darling, remember: drag has always been about breaking down boundaries and celebrating our uniqueness. Whether we're talking about the disco era, the campiness of the 80s, the ballroom balls of the 90s, or the digital landscape of today, drag will always be about challenging expectations and expressing ourselves in ways that we truly embrace.

Until next time, darlings, stay fabulous and don't forget to wear pink tutus! Remember to follow me on my journey at www.pink-tutu.com and I'll see you next month! And always, darling, remember, be a force to be reckoned with. Just like me, in my time-traveling, glitter-fueled, pink-tutu adventure. See you later, lovelies!
