Pink Tutu Time Travels: Post #725 - A 5th May 1980 Fairy Tale!

Hello darlings! It's your favourite Derbyshire drag queen, Emma, and I'm back from another magical time-travelling adventure in my shimmering pink tutu! This time, I've gone right back to the glorious 80s, all sequins, shoulder pads, and enough hairspray to fuel a small village. Oh, and I brought back some incredible tales about the wonderful world of drag!

1980? It's So Chic!

Hold onto your tiaras, darlings, because today we're taking a trip to 5th May 1980! That's right, we're going to step back in time and peek at what the drag scene looked like just over forty years ago. Did you know, on this day, The Village People released their mega hit, "Can't Stop the Music!" Talk about a party starter! The whole world was buzzing with disco beats and neon colours.

Now, you've probably heard me wax lyrical about the iconic, legendary Divine, right? Well, on this date in 1980, she graced the stage with John Waters' latest film, "Polyester." Imagine, the legendary drag icon gracing our screens, reminding everyone of the power and beauty of drag, and we were lucky enough to be alive to see it!

A Blast From the Past!

1980 saw the blossoming of drag across the world. I found myself waltzing through New York's gay scene and felt like I was in a glamorous dream. There were shows happening all over, each a shimmering celebration of individuality and artistry. Even outside the US, the fire for drag was ablaze. Think Paris with its flamboyant cabaret shows, or the underground London scene teeming with artistic, fearless performers, paving the way for the incredible talent we have today.

Now, 1980's fashion was bold, big, and just oh so fabulous! Big hair, tight dresses, and bright colors. Remember the shoulder pads? Let’s just say you needed a whole separate luggage bag just for them! The vibe was about showcasing who you were, a celebration of personality and extravagance.

It’s All About the Love of Drag!

As I've travelled through time, I've realized one thing: no matter what era or continent, the heart of drag is all about pushing boundaries, finding joy, and celebrating your true self. 1980 was just like that, a shimmering world of creativity and performance where drag artists found the power to express themselves in bold, glamorous, and unforgettable ways.

And What About My Tutu?

Of course, I wasn't without my trusty pink tutu throughout my journey. It really is the key to my time travelling abilities! It seems to open doors, attract smiles, and make me feel like a real-life fairytale princess, a dazzling vision of feminine power.
