#DragQueenHistory during 1980 12 December

Post #732: December 12th, 1980 - A Blast from the Past (and a Whole Lotta Pink!)

Oh, darlings, grab your tiaras and tighten those fishnets because you're in for a treat! Today, we're zipping through time in my magical, pink time-traveling tutu to visit December 12th, 1980! Now, don't get me wrong, a bit of 80s hairspray was never going to go amiss (it was quite a look, if you can believe it!), but in all honesty, darlings, a time travel-ready tutu is essential for keeping things fabulous and breezy!

It’s a rather chilly morning here in Derbyshire (not quite balmy enough for my signature pink tutu), so we're going to get this show on the road! Today, I’ve got a tantalising agenda lined up, darling.

This year marks a historical milestone, a fabulous moment in time which we’re going to explore together today, darling!

Now let's travel in time and discover the world of drag 42 years ago! I'm thinking, pink and feather boas, big hair, glitter and sparkles galore! Oh, the delights that await us!

*(Fast-forward, with a quick swoosh of my magical, pink tutu!) *

Let’s See What’s Happening in the World of Drag Today!

Well, darlings, it appears we are landing in the United States, smack-bang in the midst of some serious drag queen history making.

And where else could we possibly be going, other than The Roxy on Sunset Strip, Hollywood?!

I've heard that the iconic club, the legendary haven for drag queens and drag kings alike, is bursting with amazing performances. Think, high energy, high camp, and lots of glitter! A big ole dose of ‘70s drag is exactly what we need today, darlings!

As we've made it all the way to Hollywood for the grandest, most spectacular of occasions (think pink tutu!), we must visit the Coliseum. And wow! Is that a drag queen performing on a float? You better believe it is, darling! The iconic parade celebrating the opening of the Los Angeles Olympic games has got a real drag twist! This must have been absolutely divine to see live! I have got to travel back in time and make it to one of these celebrations, just for the opportunity to wear a huge sparkly pink feather boa on a parade float. That's a whole lot of “pink power” right there!

Where Else can We Travel In the World?

I just know, dearie, there must be an incredible drag show happening somewhere on planet earth today. Let’s take a peek around the globe… oh! Look at this: the world is teeming with fabulousness. It appears that London has a show, in Brighton too. We have another amazing show in Amsterdam, darlings! I love the variety of performances happening around the world. Let's just say, the universe is sending a giant signal for the whole world to put on a pink tutu right now, darling!

A Night Out in Hollywood!

Imagine, being a drag queen back in the '80s, living the dream in Hollywood … the excitement, the glamour, the fashion, and all the shows… wow, the shows! The whole place was bustling with incredible performances every single day, with a big variety of drag, it just doesn't get better than that, darlings!

But it's not all glamorous, there was still plenty of hardship for the queens during those times. The constant search for opportunities, facing a more discriminatory world - it takes true talent, courage, and determination. But that’s what we drag queens are known for.

Even in a time when things were a lot more difficult, it shows the dedication, passion and commitment the drag queens of that era had to perform for their craft. What a beautiful reminder that nothing can stop us from our dream, no matter the challenges. You can always find the bright lights at the end of the rainbow!

Let’s Find a Bit of Fun Today (and Maybe a Little Sparkle!)

Okay, darlings, let's dive into something more lighthearted (and oh, I've got something exciting brewing!). I must admit I love shopping. But let's take this shopping trip to the past for an extraordinary experience, shall we?

Let’s go on a bit of a shopping spree down Sunset Strip, Hollywood. Oh, I can see a giant boutique! It must be overflowing with the latest glamorous fashion trends for drag! Imagine finding a perfect dress in those shops. I can see sparkling, feather trimmed costumes with an abundance of sequins. Maybe, just maybe, you can find a fabulous pink feather boa on the sales rack, a vintage one with extra sparkle! I bet those vintage outfits would be perfect for a drag queen today, don't you think? It might just become a treasured vintage item in the world of fashion (if you get lucky that is!)!

Back in Time for Tea and Cakes

And there we have it, a whirlwind tour through the world of drag in December 1980! That pink tutu has certainly done some time-traveling today. I say let's get ourselves back to Derbyshire for some refreshments. And don't worry about being late because time-travel has no sense of punctuality, so don’t stress.

I do hope you enjoyed our time traveling tour. Now, off to that tea party!
