Hiya darlings! It’s your favourite pink-loving, tutu-obsessed blogger Emma, and boy, oh boy, do I have a tale to tell you about my latest jaunt through the glorious world of drag!
This time, my pink-tutu-clad self was whisked back to February 2nd, 1982. You see, as a drag queen, history isn't just something you learn in a book, it's something you experience! And that's exactly what I do, using my magical, pink tutu for a little time travel! This time I popped on a fabulous feather boa for good measure (never one to overdo it, you see!), and zoomed through time in style. I know what you’re thinking… a feather boa? That’s so 1982, right?!
The energy of the era practically hummed around me, vibrant, playful, and oh, so daring!
A Drag Dynasty in the Making!Speaking of daring, 1982 was an era of trailblazers in drag. While the mainstream wasn't fully embracing our artform, the underground drag scene was booming! And you know me, I love a good underground drag party, darlings.
This particular trip landed me in New York City, the drag epicentre of the world back then! I simply couldn't miss the legendary "Cockettes," a theatre troupe bursting with glamour and glitz. The energy was incredible! Imagine this - fabulous theatrical performances with extravagant sets, vibrant costumes, and enough glitter to rival a disco ball! Talk about making a statement! They weren't afraid to break the mould and embrace a flamboyantly feminine aesthetic that truly captivated audiences. You bet I was right in the thick of it, dancing in the aisles and basking in the pure joyous extravagance of their performance.
The "Cockettes" paved the way for future drag legends like Divine and Jackie Beat! Oh darling, I practically had a tear in my eye – witnessing the start of such an influential chapter in drag history. The audacity, the camp, the sheer exuberance… It was pure magic, all bundled into one dazzling spectacle!
But let's not forget about the queens gracing stages far beyond New York! That’s where my travels took me next.
London Calling: A Drag Delight! From the bright lights of New York, I whipped back to London, because no journey through time is complete without a taste of Britain's own queer legacy!
You see, the London scene was ablaze with a raw and exciting energy. "Gay's the Word" had just opened in 1979 and was becoming a haven for all things queer – a community hub buzzing with energy and acceptance.
There, I stumbled upon a glorious drag show in the heart of the city. Forget glitz, darling! The spirit was punk rock – an attitude that would become synonymous with British drag. Think razor-sharp looks, fierce individuality, and a raw expression of the human experience. And let me tell you, these drag queens were living for the drama and defying conventions left, right and centre!
A little peek inside the iconic cabaret, "The Stage Door", was a sight to behold. You can still feel that history in these venues even today!
More Than Just Drag: 1982 StyleBut this trip wasn't just about the vibrant world of drag! Oh, no darling! I had to get a taste of the fashions and happenings of the day. Think power shoulders, big hair, neon colours – the era was a perfect concoction of flamboyance and edginess, something I was, of course, happy to embrace.
After a delightful luncheon (salmon mousse with lemon meringue, thank you very much!) at The Ritz, I had a chance to soak up the vibrant and colourful vibes of Camden Market – the perfect destination for a quirky drag queen like me! You can never have too many brightly-colored tutus, can you? The market was filled with incredible handcrafted pieces, bold vintage finds and a distinct sense of individual style – all of it whispering to my fashion heart!
And of course, no 1982 experience is complete without a taste of the legendary 'New Romantics' scene. With bands like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet dominating the airwaves, their music and style were everywhere! Even drag queens weren't immune to the allure of their glam rock swagger, embracing the iconic look of dramatic eyeliner, teased hair and leather jackets, blending those glamorous touches into the fierce edge of the London drag scene!
And that was February 2nd, 1982 - an unforgettable, vibrant trip through a drag timeline I won't soon forget!
