Hiya darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu, your monthly dose of drag history served with a side of sequins and a dollop of sass! Itās Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu wearing time traveler. This month, we're venturing to a glittering world of glamour, where Broadway's magic mingles with the pulsating energy of downtown drag. Get ready, darlings, because we're time travelling to December 12th, 1984!
Now, I don't need to tell you all, a girl can't get her time traveling pink tutu dirty by just hopping on a bus. Oh no, darling. The time travel requires a bit of... theatricality. I mean, wouldn't you want a fabulous entrance when zipping across the decades? Think of it like the grand finale of a drag show, except with a dash of cosmic confetti and a whole lot of sparkly smoke! After all, my pink tutu has magic powers. And magic requires a good performance, wouldnāt you say?
I don't want to bore you with the nitty gritty details of my most recent fundraising drag performance (it did involve a rather impressive rendition of āThe Way We Wereā), but I can say this ā my patrons were beyond thrilled! It turns out, everyone loves a pink tutu, even if they don't want to admit it.
But back to the time travel! This month's journey saw me touching down in a city known for its big dreams and bigger hair ā New York City, 1984! Letās just say, darling, the energy here is⦠electric!
Now, I landed right in the middle of the most dazzling Drag Extravaganza in a venue called the Ballroom! It's hard to describe the atmosphere, a wild blend of glitter, liberation, and something that smelled faintly of⦠potpourri. This event was the embodiment of drag expression. The show was an explosion of colourful costumes, fearless makeup, and fierce performances that challenged the boundaries of the mainstream.
A performer named āDivineā caught my eye. Divine, or as they liked to be known, āDivinity,ā was like a drag goddess! She wore this shimmering silver jumpsuit that hugged every curve with an otherworldly grace. Now, the word on the street was that this drag queen was no stranger to Hollywood! Having performed alongside icons like John Waters, this Queen was already making her mark on pop culture. It was just electric watching her sashay across the stage in that glittery outfit, her voice belting out those catchy, campy tunes! The audience was absolutely eating it up, and frankly, darling, who could blame them? Itās no wonder, a few years later, this Queen was awarded her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
But the show didn't stop with Divine, oh no! We had everything from playful camp to glamorous ball gowns. One Queen, she had this truly spectacular, bright blue velvet ball gown ā it must have taken a team of seamstresses to get it made. She sashayed like a peacock with feathers made of feathers ā and real pearls, darling! Just imagine! It was almost as fabulous as my pink tutu! This was the kind of drag performance that redefined the term āspectacularā, you just had to see it to believe it!
After the show, I wandered the streets, soaking in the New York atmosphere. The sidewalks buzzed with the sound of laughter, the chatter of excited patrons, and the joyous clinking of glasses at bars. Everywhere I looked, there was a sense of possibility in the air, a sense of belonging for those who felt like outsiders, and a sense of acceptance that just radiated out from the Drag scene. It felt as though everything was about to burst forth with creativity. It was as though everyone was embracing that very unique and wonderful feeling of simply being your best self. I even spotted a Drag Queen strutting down 5th Avenue in a gorgeous purple, full-length gown and feather boa. A classic look darling, one that still gets us all hot under the collar even today. Itās a true time-honored statement in fashion!
Of course, it wouldn't be a proper visit to New York without some shopping, darling! I couldn't leave without visiting a couple of those funky vintage clothing shops in Greenwich Village. My little pink tutu went bonkers for the abundance of bold fabrics, vibrant colours, and glittering treasures that I stumbled across. A little black number here, a spangled waistcoat there⦠let's just say, my time-travel suitcase came home heavier than when I left! Iām saving these precious pieces of history to wear during my future drag shows!
But speaking of history, this visit to 1984 really drove home just how important Drag has been in shaping how we perceive and embrace individuality, self-expression, and artistry today. From the electrifying performances on stage to the fashion trends gracing the streets, every aspect of this historical period screams, ābe you, be proud, and be fearless!ā
