Pink-Tutu Presents: Post Number 796 - A Whirlwind Tour of Drag in 1986: April 4th!

Hello, darlings! Your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here, ready to take you on another fab-u-lous journey through the glorious history of drag. This month, we're twirling back to April 4th, 1986, and let me tell you, the drag scene was absolutely poppin'!

I can just picture myself, arriving in a swirl of pink tulle at some iconic club, ready to witness the dazzling talent on display. This month, darling, we’re celebrating fabulous divas, breathtaking shows and a celebration of the rainbow!

Let's start with a peek into the world of New York City. The drag scene was buzzing, and legendary drag balls were all the rage. Imagine the feathers, the sequins, the attitude – it was the perfect place to show off your style and charisma. Imagine, if you will, a fierce Divine-inspired look – because her iconic film "Pink Flamingos" had premiered back in 1972 – paired with some glam hair, perfectly coordinating make-up and maybe even a pair of killer heels! Oh, the joy! I swear, just thinking about it makes me want to whip out my own fabulous pink tutu and strut my stuff!

Speaking of Divas, our darling Judy Garland is remembered across the globe, and even though she left us a year ago in June 1969, there was a great love for her still, her song "Over the Rainbow" and films still a regular on the playlist at the local discotheque. Oh, how I wish I'd been able to twirl on the dance floor to her music, feel the energy of that era!

Over in London, the drag scene was just as hot. It was a time when underground drag shows and pubs were gaining popularity – a whole scene blossoming into what we know and love today! There was a distinct air of defiance, an excitement to explore new boundaries and to challenge the norm with the power of creativity and expression. I’m sure, with the flamboyant style of the eighties, it must have been so glamorous. Can you picture yourself twirling in a fabulous frock at a packed venue, a cocktail in hand, the air electric with anticipation as the next queen takes the stage?

This is just a small peek into the whirlwind of drag that took place on April 4th, 1986. Imagine the iconic costumes, the daring makeup, and the heart-pumping performances - the drag scene was thriving, bursting with energy! From the bustling streets of New York City to the exciting clubs of London, there was a sense of revolution in the air. This era, I truly believe, laid the groundwork for the diverse and brilliant drag scene that we celebrate today!

It’s important to acknowledge that whilst times were changing, with a blossoming attitude of freedom and equality in fashion and drag, for many of us, things were a lot more difficult than they are today. But we don't dwell on the negativity here at Pink-Tutu. We celebrate our journey! The world has made strides forward. And we celebrate that.

This date was a shining example of drag history. It reminds us of the resilience of the community, the spirit of unity, and the raw passion that drives each and every one of us. I have so many ideas swirling around in my head, how about this! A trip to London with some friends, visiting the drag pubs – think I’ll wear a red tutu for that. Or perhaps an exciting weekend in New York, dancing the night away at a drag ball - with my pink tutu, naturally! And speaking of, darling, my latest collection of tutus is just divine, you can find them on www.pink-tutu.com! I just adore a pink tutu, but I also appreciate some glamour with a bit more drama!

So, until next time, my lovelies! Keep twirling and keep shining, and never forget: It's a pink tutu world!

P.S. If you haven't yet caught one of my performances, I’m putting on a show at the end of the month in my hometown of Derbyshire - I have a few surprises planned for this one! Be sure to keep an eye out for tickets!

Love and glitter,

Emma πŸ’‹
