Darlings,
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! Itās your girl Emma here, and my dear, this month's trip back in time was a real feather in my cap! It's always an adventure, but this one was extra special, and all because of my absolute love for all things ballet!
The date was June 6th, 1986. The year was just buzzing with fabulousness! I twirled my way through time in my specially-made pink, time-travelling tutu, and let me tell you, the sheer excitement was enough to give me a sugar rush!
Now, we all know I adore a good show. I've got to have some glitz, some glam, and a whole heap of charisma on my journeys through the ages, so my dear, the first thing on my agenda was checking out what the drag scene had to offer on this specific day. And oh, darlings, did it not disappoint!
London was overflowing with divine Drag
There was just so much going on! First, we went to the iconic "Drag Me to the Moon" performance at the Rainbow Theatre. Just imagine, darlings, a real cabaret in all its glory! There were lip syncs, dancing, feathers galore, and fabulous drag queens dripping in sequins - pure campy heaven!
Over on Dean Street, The Royal Vauxhall Tavern was the epicentre of Drag. * Now, this wasn't just a venue, darlings, it was an absolute institution. We all know, a trip back in time isnāt complete without a pitstop at this legendary space. This particular evening, there was an exciting show taking place, *"The Nightclub" featuring, of all things, drag queen wrestling! Imagine the campy glory of that, darling! It just sounds fantastic!
I am telling you, 1986 London was living for drag. There were also events happening all over the city. I bumped into some drag royalty. Divine was even in town, but the star of the night was Leigh Bowery, and oh, darling! That man! I couldnāt get over his artistry and daring. If anyone could carry off an outrageous outfit, it was him! The sheer variety and energy in London, all just simmering away within the Drag scene, it was enough to send me into a total diva-tastic daze.
Drag on the West Coast, Oh Yeah
I didnāt just stick to London on this trip, I whizzed through time to LA. There, the *L.A. Connection, * which is still running strong, hosted a great event that was packed with an energy and sassiness I absolutely adore. It felt like a real melting pot, a place where drag really felt free.
Itās times like these, darling, when you realise that no matter what time period you're in, drag always thrives. Itās just so full of creativity, diversity, and love.
But Darling, this Trip was More than Just Drag
However, the star of the show on this June 6th wasn't just the fabulous Drag. It was ballet, darling! Oh yes, I fell absolutely head-over-heels for New York's ballet scene! Itās always been my ultimate passion and my obsession with it is almost as strong as my obsession with Pink Tutus!
Itās something I knew, darling, the ballet scene back then was on fire! And oh my, that year's season at the New York City Ballet was to die for. They brought to life all my favourite masterpieces by Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. I must confess, it did give me some inspiration for a few future tutu designs. You know, the sort that are gonna leave everyone gagging.
There was even the Joffrey Balletās* "The Bells of Notre Dame**.ā Just picture, darling, it's like my dreams come true. This beautiful, majestic, performance - the sheer drama, the passion, and the absolutely exquisite costumes... I just wished I could be part of it, to feel that rush of excitement as a part of the whole scene.
I canāt talk about Fashion, without a Touch of Shopping!
And, whatās a fabulous girl like myself on a trip back in time going to do with all this fashion? Well, it goes without saying darling, some serious shopping!
I found myself at Bloomingdaleās on Lexington Avenue, surrounded by rows upon rows of chic and glamorous looks. It was just what I needed for a touch of that *1986 glamour. * I canāt just go time traveling, darlings, I also have to find ways to work the era in my style, right? And darling, do you know what I discovered?
The pink tulle explosion
Oh, my dear, did you know the 80s just adored their *pink tulle! * Itās literally everywhere, it was an essential material for a princess. And as soon as I laid eyes on this divine material, I was obsessed, just as much as the era itself was obsessed! I absolutely had to have some in my own personal tutu collection.
You know I have the most fab tailor who can work with the most magnificent tulle for all my travelling needs. Youād think by now Iād have every type of tutu ever created in existence, but some days you just need something a bit different. The fabrics back then were so full of life, and you could feel just how unique they were. They didnāt skimp on the fabric darling!
You could see it in the fashion, you could feel it in the atmosphere of these stores, the 1980s were all about big, dramatic, gorgeous clothes and, well, as we both know, I am here for it! *
Of Course, My Time Traveling Needs a Little Style.
The great thing about the 80s, it was just so creative and expressive. A time where people really knew how to make a statement, and oh my darling, I made my own statement that day. Let me just tell you about some of the fantastic things I found:
- I snatched myself a fuschia sequin jacket just to really bring out my personality and give my tutu outfit the perfect statement touch.
-I found a bright coral handbag so that my pink tutu ensemble wasn't too matchy-matchy.
-To finish off this divine look, I got myself a pair of bright red stiletto heels. Because my dear, who wants to be flat footed? The power is in the heel, you feel?
And yes, I bought a whole load of pink tulle to top it all off. You already know that darling. The 80s were obsessed with this magnificent material, and who am I to disagree? Pink tulle, just the way I like it.
Now darlings, all those bright colours and big styles have left me in a total trance, I need a break! You already know this story wonāt end here, Iāll catch you next month, for another wonderful trip back in time.
Until next month darlings, keep it fabulous!
xx Emma
