Pink-Tutu Post #806: A Ballerina's Journey to 1987 - February 2nd

Oh darling, I simply must tell you about my latest trip in the Pink Tutu Time Machine! This month, I jetted off to February 2nd, 1987, a time when shoulder pads were larger than life, leg warmers were all the rage, and neon was, well, neon. Let's just say my pink tutu made me feel right at home.

Fashionable Frolics and Feathered Follies

I was immediately struck by the dazzling mix of bold colours and audacious designs! It was like a kaleidoscope of fashion exploded in the street. From the feather boas and glitter to the shimmering sequins and oversized jewellery, it felt like a non-stop drag runway show. And I'm not just talking about the drag queens! This was a time when everyone embraced the drama, everyone understood the joy of a well-placed boa!

The drag shows themselves were a different story. Imagine a mix of cabaret, burlesque, and theatrical spectacle with a sprinkle of campy humour and all the glamour you can handle. You see, back then, drag queens weren't just performing in the usual gay clubs, oh no, they were bringing their art to theatres, nightclubs, and even universities. There was a genuine, glorious celebration of the performative, of embracing the transformative power of drag.

Diamonds are a Drag Queen's Best Friend

As you all know, my darling readers, I'm obsessed with sequins, but those vintage gowns in 1987 were like a rainbow dream come true. Layers and layers of shimmering fabric adorned with gemstones, and I swear some queens even had rhinestones sewn onto their eyelashes! Now that's what I call commitment to the craft!

This period saw a truly diverse array of styles and themes. Queens were embracing their inner sirens, their sassy alter-egos, and their dazzling imaginations. They were breaking barriers and inspiring generations of drag performers to come. I can see why it was dubbed the "Golden Age" of Drag. It was truly a sight to behold!

Dancing into the 80s with Diana Ross

And speaking of a spectacle, you won't believe this! In a truly unforgettable moment, I stumbled upon a drag tribute show celebrating the queen herself - Diana Ross! Imagine my absolute delight at witnessing a fabulous queen channeling all the glitz and glamour of Motown!

With every hair flip, every costume change, and every dazzling note, the show captivated the entire audience. It was a reminder that the power of drag goes beyond the stage and enters into the realms of entertainment and inspiration. That's something truly special, darlings.

The Unforgettable Legacy

But let's talk about the big players in drag on February 2nd, 1987, the stars that ignited the world of drag. Names like Divine, Holly Woodlawn, and Jackie Beat are legendary for their daring performances and bold attitude, and they certainly were all present at a huge variety show called "Wigstock", which brought the downtown NYC queer community together to celebrate drag.

Let's not forget RuPaul! Back then, she was just a budding drag queen, already carving a space for herself in the scene. Her artistry was bubbling with excitement, ready to inspire the entire world, and I must admit, her vibrant energy truly ignited something special within me. She taught me that it's all about expressing your true self with unwavering confidence and a whole lot of pink glitter, darlings!

Making the World a Little More Pink

Of course, no visit to the past is complete without a bit of shopping. Imagine my glee when I stumbled upon a vintage store chock-full of tutus in every colour of the rainbow. There were frills, feathers, and more tulle than you could ever imagine. I must admit, darling, I did indulge in a couple of additions for my collection. It wouldn't be a time-travel adventure without some spoils for myself!

After all, you know what they say: "Pink is the new black" - or at least, it should be! My darling readers, don't let your life be a boring old beige, embrace your inner diva, and step out with a little pink flair. I'll leave you with that thought and remind you that next month, my journey continues, but for now, let's celebrate the legacy of drag in all its glory!
