Hello, my darling dears! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood, pink tutu wearing, time travelling drag queen. This month on my little blog, www.pink-tutu.com, I'm zipping back to the fabulous year of 1987. That's right, I'm going back to when Madonna ruled the airwaves and the Cold War still held a grip on the world.
This is post number 815 on my little time travelling adventure. Itβs amazing what you can find on the drag scene back in the 80s. The hair, the makeup, the outfits β just pure fabulousness, darling! Plus, this month is a big one for drag, so let's get into it!
Tutu Time Travels!
My magical pink tutu whisked me back to 1987 like a flash. Honestly, darling, I couldn't believe how many shops had these wonderful big, puffy skirts in pink! It was just perfect!
I stepped into a bustling New York city, and my heart went "tick-tock" like a clockwork doll when I saw a little handwritten sign outside a bar β βDrag Extravaganza tonight! Get your tickets, girls!β This was clearly my destination!
It felt like a proper Broadway night, with a mix of street-style drag performers and full theatrical performances. This night had the glitz and glamour that would make even the most discerning drag queen go weak at the knees.
I saw incredible routines on stage! My eyes nearly popped out of my head at the level of makeup artistry. It was the time of big, bright eyeshadow and lip colours. There was some wild wig work happening on that stage, too. My heart skipped a beat. It felt so good to witness a little drag history, darling!
The Power of Drag
Back in the 80s, drag queens, or drag kings, were pushing boundaries like no other. They were expressing themselves, they were making their voices heard, and they were doing it with such fabulous flair.
Itβs really inspirational to look back on the drag scene during this period, because itβs such a vital part of the journey towards inclusivity, and getting everyone wearing pink tutus.
So what else is happening in the world of drag this month in 1987, you ask?
Drag Scene Snapshots:
San Francisco's Drag Ball: This incredible annual event was happening on this very date, and from my tutu'd vantage point I could hear the beats pumping out of the dancehall and watch the dazzling drag royalty sashay across the floor!
RuPaul's First Appearance: Remember when RuPaul first emerged on the scene as the ultimate Drag Queen? Yes! This month, 11th November, 1987, sees this legendary figure in her early career appearing at "The Continental" club in NYC! Can you imagine!
Drag Becomes Mainstream: The 80s really did open up drag to the masses. It wasn't just for nightclubs anymore. There were movies, magazines and television featuring drag. That was amazing progress in a very short time!
It's Time For Tutu Tea Time!
As we reach the end of another thrilling trip down #DragQueenHistory, let's take a moment for a nice cup of tea and reflect.
Drag is all about celebrating our individuality, pushing boundaries and having a whole lot of fun. So, whether you're a seasoned drag queen, a curious beginner or just someone who loves a good show, I encourage you to get involved.
Why not go see a drag show, darling? Let your hair down, laugh with friends, and embrace the amazing world of drag. It might just change your life. And I'd be most delighted if you even put on a pink tutu too, for good measure!
Don't forget to check back on www.pink-tutu.com for my next month's trip down Drag Queen History lane. Until then, stay fabulous and remember, darling: It's never too late to put on your tutu and embrace your inner drag queen!
