Hello, darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time traveler! April 4th, 1989, is upon us, and you bet your bottom dollar this little bird is flapping her wings all the way to…well, downtown New York, of course! And let me tell you, girlies, the city that never sleeps is positively sizzling tonight.
We’re going back to the age of oversized hair, fabulous makeup and even bigger dreams! I mean, this is the decade that brought us RuPaul, so you KNOW it's going to be a camp-tastic evening!
A Pink Tutu Through Time
Remember, dear readers, I travel through time in the most magical pink tutu ever dreamt up! It’s covered in rhinestones, sequins and all manner of shimmery goodness, plus, it has the coolest, twirly, sparkly wings. This time, I've adorned it with a bright red feather boa for a touch of fierce glamour – and just because I like to play around with my look, darlings!
I must admit, though, traveling in this dazzling garment sometimes makes me stick out like a sore thumb amongst the locals. Last month, when I found myself in London’s Soho district during the mid-70s, a sweet old lady asked me if I was going to the circus! Luckily, I had just learned how to do a proper "death drop" and managed to escape without needing a quick change. But that’s the thrill of it, my dears! I'm like a walking, dancing rainbow - a joyous beacon of positivity and glitz!
The Scene is Sizzlin'
Oh my stars, this drag scene in downtown New York is just...divine! I’m practically bursting at the seams with excitement. The vibe is absolutely electric – think high energy, flamboyant outfits, and enough hairspray to rival the industrial factories of Detroit!
Speaking of hairspray, there are hairdos so spectacular you'd think they were created by an over-enthusiastic sculptor! We’ve got gravity-defying wigs, cascading curls, and the highest, most extravagant beehives imaginable. If you weren’t looking straight ahead, you might even get swept off your feet!
Legendary Ladies
As the evening kicks off, the air crackles with anticipation. I've managed to nab a front-row seat for a truly iconic show: "The Village Voice Presents: New York Drag." My pink tutu, I can tell, is already causing quite a stir. Tonight's line-up is packed with iconic drag queens who are going to be absolute legends!
The stage is illuminated, and the audience cheers with the thunderous energy only a true drag show can evoke! The queens are sashaying and strutting, their looks more glamorous than the last. I’ve been to many shows in my travels, and trust me when I say these queens are masters of their craft.
And what are the masters serving tonight? I can't resist sharing a few of my favorite highlights:
Holly Woodlawn, oh my heavens, what a vision! She's dazzling in a glittering silver gown and strutting her legendary style that's got everyone swooning. It's pure star power.
*Divine, *a powerhouse performer in her own right, is channeling ultimate campiness in a massive pink frock with even more oversized hair than mine, it's glorious! Her energy is infectious and her comedy sketches have the whole room roaring with laughter!
Lady Bunny, with her incredible voice and fierce personality, takes the stage for a dynamic performance. She is everything you could wish for in a true New York drag queen – sharp wit, killer voice and a look that would make a supermodel jealous!
I’m mesmerized! It’s a total joyride for the senses!

While the show is on, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride. The whole energy of this show is an inspiring reminder of how drag has changed over time and the power it wields. I’ve learned so much from these trailblazers. Their talent and creativity inspire me to always stay true to myself and keep pushing my boundaries!
Every time I go on these time-traveling adventures, I see just how drag truly brings people together, it empowers, and inspires, and brings joy! It is an art form that transcends time, boundaries, and cultures, offering a place for everyone to be their most authentic selves.
