Let's Begin the Draggy Journey!

A Peep Show in Derbyshire, England:

Oh my, my lovely darlings, my journey starts, as it so often does, back home in the glorious, if often misunderstood, county of Derbyshire. On this specific December day in 1990, my favourite Derbyshire nightclub, the infamous [Insert Nightclub Name] , was rocking a phenomenal drag show! I imagine it would be an extravaganza of feathered costumes, fabulous hairdos, and perhaps even a touch of local Derbyshire humour! I must go back, you see, and give you a proper rundown of what they were serving in Derbyshire back then. A little peep show from Derbyshire's queen of drag... or a hilarious drag king show with a cheeky twist? Perhaps! This, darlings, is why I time travel, to delve deeper, to dig for these treasures from the past!

Now, let’s jet-set, shall we? Our magical pink tutu will whisk us around the world in no time…

The Big Apple & a Little Bit of Broadway Glamour

The US, darling! The land of the free, the home of the brave, and of course, the iconic New York City drag scene! Oh darling, how I love to time-travel back to this amazing city and bask in its drag heritage. Now, December 1990, I envision fabulous queens sashay-ing down the stages of legendary spots like The Stonewall Inn - I'm imagining fabulous lipsync performances, killer drag looks and those "WOW!" moments that make the hair on your neck stand on end! I'll bet you they had some fabulous tributes to iconic Broadway productions like ā€œThe Phantom of the Operaā€ or ā€œCatsā€, in full-on drag fashion, of course! You know I love those fierce showstopper drag tributes!

A Glimpse into San Francisco’s Queer Nightlife

Now, for a quick dash over to the Golden Gate City – oh San Francisco, your drag history is truly a treasure! I imagine that December in 1990, a vibrant scene was bursting from the iconic nightclubs and bars of San Francisco. Places like The Cockettes and The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, were pushing boundaries, breaking rules, and being pure, unadulterated joy! The early days of Drag Balls were becoming popular in San Francisco around this time! Think big wigs, dramatic dresses, and a fierce attitude that took over the streets! I bet the dance floor was a whirling, twirling, fabulous mix of everything and everyone!

Down Under, The Aussie Drag Queens Were In Full Bloom

Ooh, let's hop over to Australia now! This is where my fabulous tutu shines. Those Australian queens know how to put on a good show, darlings. The scene was blooming in December 1990, and I imagine it was a riot of colour and sassy entertainment. The vibrant and daring scene that was evolving in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth had a unique edge – a sassy, independent, "don’t-mess-with-us" spirit that I absolutely adore. It was during this period that iconic Aussie drag queens began their careers, captivating audiences and changing the landscape of drag in Australia! I imagine it's a scene of high energy, with queens experimenting, challenging the norms and putting on sensational performances! Now that’s a vibe I'd love to experience in person, oh darling!

Across the Channel – Paris was Blooming!

Darling, we can’t go to Paris and forget about drag! We have to! We must go and dive headfirst into the glamorous French drag scene! Paris was buzzing in 1990, a hub of drag, and my inner fashionista is excited. Can you imagine the fabulous looks in a Parisian drag scene at this time? I'm thinking sleek lines, sharp suits, and those incredible hairstyles with a French twist - or perhaps something quite the opposite - with fabulous, bold and outlandish creations! I bet there were some incredibly talented performers making a statement on stages in Paris around this time! This is where drag fashion was making its bold mark, where I can really see some amazing inspiration for my future pink tutu-inspired looks.
