Darling, you wonβt believe where my pink tutu whisked me off to this month! Back in time to July 7th, 1991, and let me tell you, it was absolutely fabulous! You know, we have this glorious new-fangled thing called the "internet" now (ooh, I do love the way it buzzes and makes that whirring sound!). So, I had a bit of a scroll through some archives, just to get a sense of what the drag world was like back in the day. Now, picture this, it's 1991 and my trusty pink tutu magically transports me right into the heart of a legendary New York drag club. Talk about a fabulous find!
The lights are dim, the music is thumping, and the energy is electrifying! Now, you know I'm a girl who loves her glitz and glamour, and let me tell you, these queens were serving it up hot! One of my absolute faves, Divine, the legendary drag icon from the cult film Pink Flamingos, was fronting up this spectacular extravaganza, and let me tell you, my darlings, the entire crowd was enthralled.
I was absolutely mesmerized, twirling and flitting around the club, feeling every bit like a graceful swan dipped in a vat of shimmering sequins and glitter. (And darling, I just had to get a couple of photos of course β can't be on a fabulous drag adventure without snapping a few pics to show the girls at the Derbyshire Drag Den back home!) Now, even back in the day, my pink tutu seemed to catch people's eyes - they just couldn't take their gaze off of me! It was wonderful!
Divine, she truly was an icon, a legend, my dears, just truly wonderful! I mean, you all know she was the ultimate queen of camp! (It's absolutely criminal that some people still haven't seen the amazing, hilarious Pink Flamingos! It's a cult classic, darling, absolutely unforgettable! Just imagine Divine in her magnificent get-up! Truly outrageous! - It made me want to get my very own Divine outfit, a lacy blue dress with a massive beehive, just utterly spectacular!)
Oh darling, speaking of drag on this very special day back in 1991, what was happening over in London, you ask? Well, let's just say it was truly fabulous! A group of super talented drag performers, the absolute dream-team of queens: The Divine Comedy, Jackie Beat, John Waters, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch - just imagine it - they all joined forces for a super exciting, ultra fabulous performance at the fabulous* Battersea Arts Centre*. Can you even imagine? Well, let me tell you, I was so swept away with excitement, I just had to give these wonderful queens a massive, heartfelt cheer! And that, my dears, is how the magical time travelling powers of my trusty pink tutu led me to an absolutely amazing day in drag history.
