Hello, darlings! It's your girl Emma, and I'm so thrilled to welcome you back to another exciting adventure in #DragQueenHistory! This month, I'm taking my magical, time-travelling pink tutu to the Big Apple – that's New York City for you uncultured pearls – because oh honey, it's 1992, and this city is on FIRE!
I'm talking iconic queens, groundbreaking drag, and enough fabulousness to make your wig snatch itself! But first, a quick sip of my pink lemonade and a twirl for all my lovely readers! It's time for the pink-est pink news in pink history!
You guys won't believe what I found out while channeling my inner Madame Delacroix, my vintage fashion icon (it's the ruched pink gown she wears with a giant pink feather boa, honey!) We have reached the magical month of February, which as everyone knows, is the month for LOVE, FUN and FASCINATING #DragQueenHistory!! Did you know that on February 2nd, 1992, a true icon was born? This Queen has blessed the drag scene with years of hilarious drag humor and sassy realness. It's the birthday of the absolutely FABULOUS Bianca Del Rio!
You heard me right darlings. My fellow pink tutu loving, time-traveling queens – The RuPaul's Drag Race season six winner, the one and only Bianca Del Rio was born on this day. To celebrate this amazing occasion I will be wearing her Bird season six look to our weekly drag bingo session in Chesterfield (more on that later)!
Now, back to the Big Apple! It was a very exciting time in 1992 – the world was going wild for drag! New York City was practically exploding with drag royalty, and honey, my tutu was READY to get its glamour on!
*Oh, honey! Remember, February is also the month of... * Valentine's Day! You know what that means... Drag shows, galas, and events that are the perfect blend of glitz, glam, and good times. My calendar was bursting with must-see shows and fabulous gatherings, honey!
Let's get into some Drag Queen Gossip darlings! Now, imagine this: You’re at a glamorous night club, surrounded by glamorous queens, with fabulous drag shows going on throughout the night. I am telling you – it's pure enchantment!
And if you were lucky, you might have caught the stunning Lady Chablis making her grand entrance at The Eighth Street Club – oh my! She was the embodiment of elegance and charm, truly the perfect Valentine's treat for your senses.
I must tell you - *Drag history is SO much more than a walk down memory lane, it's a time travel through an epic fashion fairytale!! * I get the most wonderful fashion ideas when I get to go back and visit the early 90s drag scene. I have found some real gems – especially those amazing high platform heels (that’s my fashion obsession by the way!).
Now for my monthly segment – "Emma's Drag Scene Gossip". Gossip is my middle name I have a tea party to prepare... (You heard that right – tea party!) This is your chance to join me on my monthly tea party and catch up with my monthly updates from my time travelling pink tutu adventures in history!
Emma’s Drag Scene Gossip #866 - On this date in 1992...
*There were tons of drag balls and galas in the city! * The Miss Gay America pageant, held annually to crown the reigning Miss Gay America, was all the rage this year! The events drew huge crowds, creating an energetic, joyous atmosphere – a dazzling spectacle where drag talent shone bright! I have a dream to wear my *rainbow * tulle pink tutu at a *Miss Gay America event - I think the bright colors will look incredible on stage, honey!!
New York was a hotbed of exciting drag talent. * The city was buzzing with shows like *"The Boy Who Sang on the Back of the Buses", and "It's Over at the Bell", both running in various parts of New York. Imagine those outrageous costumes! Oh, darling!! I would have been in heaven!
You just knew a fabulous drag show would pop up every night. I managed to catch Alexis Arquette's "The Drag Queen in Chains" at *“The Theater in Soho" * Alexis Arquette was so bold, honey. And I loved her sense of style - oh, the wigs!! Iconic
Did I mention Boystown? * This district was known for being a place where queer culture really thrived, especially on *“Wednesdays and Fridays”, * the main night’s of the *Hamburger Mary’s drag shows** They had such amazing performers and fantastic parties, every week, they were a truly incredible place to be for a drag queen!
Speaking of drag queens... There was also “Club 54” in New York City. Oh, it's one of those famous places from my past that just HAS to be mentioned! My oh my – Club 54 – what a blast from the past!! I imagine drag performances would have been more on the risqué side (we were only talking about a *"few decades before *RuPaul's Drag Race, darling!), but for the most iconic queens... everything was pure drag perfection, honey!*
Okay so back to the world of fashion, this week – we are having an impromptu dress up competition with my best friend Mary from high school. We're making a fabulous evening of it, serving full glam looks. We decided we would choose looks from *vintage magazine* * covers from *"January 1992" * and dress like them for a "glamorous dinner" at the “Little Caesars”. You can only *imagine how we are going to rock those iconic 90’s fashion looks!!! (I think Mary might have chosen a vintage Spice Girls look – so many cute ones!!).
And for this month's pink tutu fashion inspiration – my choice is for a classic 90’s *pink tutu look.- * I'm thinking* a layered, ruffled tulle pink tutu in all sorts of shades of pink and red for some bold flair!!
- * I’m hoping to find* a vintage sparkly pink cropped bolero (preferably with lots of sequins! And some feathered wings for good measure.
- I might even be brave enough to go full on makeup and hair inspiration from my 90s' glam look – just a little extra shimmer for our evening, honey!
If you’re just starting out, find some great second-hand finds for inspiration, honey! (Just be sure you take time to have everything professionally altered.) That’s a super cheap trick that can save you so much money for that glamorous outfit!!
*Keep it pink, keep it glamorous, and stay FABULOUS! *
Emma xx
