Pink Tutu Travels: 891 - March 3rd, 1994, a Glitter Bomb of Drag!

Hello my darlings, Emma here! Time to dust off your dancing shoes and let’s twirl through history! This month we’re shimmying back to March 3rd, 1994. Grab your feather boas, polish your platform boots, and let’s do a bit of a time hop to a fabulous day in the world of drag!

Now, as you all know, this fabulously fashionable Pink Tutu needs some funding for all our time-travelling shenanigans. And where do we get it, you ask? Well, it's time for my weekly drag shows, darling! And this week, I'm feeling a little inspired by my 1994 jaunt, so my performance is gonna be a true House of Xtravaganza throw back. Think full-body glitter, neon-bright hair, and enough tulle to rival a royal wedding. I'm talking, glamour! I'll be taking my own twist on 90s house, with a bit more Pink Tutu in it. Don't worry, it'll still be high energy! You lot won't be able to keep yourselves off the dance floor.

Speaking of the dance floor, it was 1994 and the world of drag was in a tumble! I'm not saying that the drag scene in the early 90s wasn't phenomenal - there were incredible queens, incredible talent. But this was the cusp of a revolution for the scene, my loves!

Picture this: you’re in New York, maybe in some drag club in Greenwich Village - or, if you’re feeling super glam, in a swanky nightclub in Chelsea. On stage is Divine! Now, I know, you may not know this icon but she was major for drag! A larger-than-life character who became one of John Waters' (of the equally infamous Hairspray and Pink Flamingos) leading ladies!

You’re all singing and clapping and throwing dollars! On that date, 3rd of March, 1994, you’re in for a special treat, because Divine had just debuted Pink Flamingos! Now, some might think this movie was a bit out there, but for me, it was an ode to queer creativity and a beautiful explosion of artistic vision! And just wait till you get a look at those outfits. Pure divine!

In the meantime, whilst we’re dancing and living our best life, across the Atlantic in England, the world was also beginning to experience the infectious energy of British drag culture. There were some absolutely iconic performers rocking the UK, some of them making history even today. Just imagine for a moment, a queen performing, all in the name of glitz, glamour, and showing everyone a bit of a good time, a legend - a legend, a queen, and someone we're so proud of - we’re talking the legendary Divine.

And if that's not enough to send you through the roof with fabulousness, there’s more! You all know we love to hit the shops for that all-important outfit, and in the UK on March 3rd 1994, the scene was hopping. You'll have the choice between all those super stylish stores of the era, places like Topshop or a trip to the department stores. Who needs a time machine? Just a visit to any of these places, darling, will have you stepping right into 1994! And as if that wasn't enough to make a girl squeal, we can't forget the absolute gem of the decade, Topman. This store had all the 90s hits! Denim jackets, oversized hoodies, even if it wasn't the decade for our pink tutus - even back then, they were beginning to see the power of a good tutu. But even if that doesn't tempt you, there were all the best in classic British fashion - and it was affordable. Don't get me started on the sheer luxury of vintage finds back in that era! It’s true, darling. I love my vintage shopping, because even if there’s an odd patch here and there, it truly shows you have an eye for style.

Speaking of style, imagine popping into a café and, instead of looking at your phone, you’re obsessing over the newest magazine. I mean, remember, the internet was barely starting to get into its stride in 1994! That means all your gossip and news on everything fabulous? Well, it came from magazines. Now, you can choose - a glossy magazine with a full-page fashion spread, or one about all the latest goings on in the queer scene. If you’re a queen who likes a bit of gossip, then get that mag. We always say, what happens in 1994 stays in 1994. Don’t forget the photos, darling! Those are sure to make their way onto my vintage collage boards back in my 2024 studio!

March 3rd 1994. What a glorious time to be a queen! It was, in every way, the start of so much change!

Looking ahead…

Where shall our Pink Tutu whisk us away to next month? What's coming up on the calendar of fabulousness? I can't possibly tell you all just yet! But here’s what I will say - I will say this much: I know we’re in for a trip back to a time filled with iconic queens, wild fashions and so many fabulous places to get your fashion fix! I may be keeping the specifics a little under wraps (for now!) But what I will say is it's gonna be totally worth the wait.

So until we twirl through the portals of time together, be sure to get your fix of fabulousness on www.pink-tutu.com, where you'll find everything you need to embrace your inner queen.

Don’t forget, stay fabulous, and don’t be afraid to embrace the pink tutu in your life!

Emma 💋
