Darling,
Gather round! Let’s get ready for another whirlwind adventure, the latest instalment of your girl Emma’s time travelling pink-tutu blog! As always, this month I’m twirling straight back to that dazzling day, May 1996! Oh my gosh, imagine it… the iconic ‘90s, the grunge era, where oversized jackets and flannel were king! I think I still have my old pair of Doc Martens hiding somewhere in the back of my wardrobe! Oh darling, remember that unforgettable time when grunge music and street fashion were the ultimate statement?! Well, my lovely little time-travelling, pink-tutu clad self just HAD to find out if the world of drag embraced that style, or was embracing something completely different!
My latest voyage took me straight to New York City, the Big Apple, the City that Never Sleeps! I think you’ll be shocked to discover that in 1996, even in this glamorous and daring metropolis, drag fashion wasn’t really embracing that gritty grunge look!
It’s hard to believe, but even the street style of the time wasn't quite as 'glam as the queens were rocking in 1996! So where did I find the magic of drag that day in 1996? I thought I’d take a little detour and go to a real treat of a night at The Pyramid Club, a historic New York nightclub. That’s where legendary queen, Amanda Lepore was making history. She was completely out-of-this-world, shimmering and dazzling in her trademark body-hugging gowns, showcasing her larger than life personality! She was, simply, fabulous! My darling, this is absolute drag queen royalty, the icon of the house and ball scene, known for her fabulous femininity and pioneering spirit! I tell you, she set the club on fire with her incredible dance routine! She was literally flying around, dazzling the audience in an extravaganza of glittering gowns, a veritable rainbow of glamour! And can we talk about those lips? They are so legendary, you'll spot them in your wildest dreams. My love for those fierce, over the top beauties are, dare I say, "infinite"!
Now, back to those legendary ‘90s grungy looks. We may have had to go back in time for that! You won’t believe who I met! We actually went straight to a glam rock drag show starring the queen of glam, * *Divine. Remember John Waters? Well, Divine was his fabulous drag queen star and she was serving high-drama, avant-garde beauty! Imagine this: a gorgeous white wig, exaggerated eyeliner, a killer shade of ruby red lipstick, total fabulousness!
As we headed out, I couldn't resist picking up some amazing accessories, like feather boas that are perfect for my favourite vintage inspired pink tutu, you know? (Remember to grab yours on www.pink-tutu.com! We’ve got new stock in just waiting for you!) This fabulous feathered accessory makes a great way to add a touch of retro flair to any ensemble! Oh, darling! This is the ultimate secret weapon in my travel kit for stepping back in time. Feather boas! Who could resist such luxurious, fluffy brilliance?! I literally can't! It’s all in the details! I love how versatile these accessories can be, from adding some fabulous vintage drama to your outfit for an evening on the town, or even a quirky accessory to glam up your look while out shopping, they never fail to get you noticed.
This time-traveling spree was definitely a revelation, darling. The beauty and diversity of drag culture in New York, with its rich history of fabulousness, never ceases to amaze me!
Now I must leave you on that! The world of pink-tutus is calling, but not before a cheeky, glamous outfit-shopping session in Derbyshire!
Catch you next month!
Xoxo, Emma
