Hello, darling Divas! It's your girl Emma, fresh from another time-traveling adventure, and this month's escapade was simply divine! Oh, honey, you won't believe where this magical pink tutu took me - New York City, August 1996!
Let me tell you, even with my extensive knowledge of drag history, nothing could have prepared me for the electrifying energy buzzing through the streets of Manhattan.
This was, after all, the heart of the drag scene in the 90s. A glorious period, a melting pot of style and rebellion, all fueled by the fierce artistry of drag. From the legendary balls and the underground club scene, to the glitzy drag theaters, the whole city felt like one massive, fabulous runway!
As I gracefully waltzed down Broadway (with a sassy sashay and a pirouette or two for good measure, naturally), my eyes popped at every corner, mesmerized by the technicolour kaleidoscopes of outfits - all the sequins, the platforms, the sheer artistry! It was an explosion of pink and feather boa bliss.
My pink tutu had never felt more at home, and as I drifted through the crowds, it whispered all the exciting secrets of the month: The iconic "Wigstock" festival was just around the corner!
Honey, can you imagine? A whole weekend of drag superstars, electrifying live performances, and some serious wig-styling ? I was ready to trade my feather boa for a whole wig collection, and get ready to wig-out in the most unbelievable, fabulous, way!
Of course, the scene wasn't just confined to those big shows, my darlings! It was in the underground clubs, where drag queens performed with fierce abandon - each show a kaleidoscope of artistic brilliance, celebrating the magic of self-expression!
Even those clubs with names that make you giggle (like, say, "The Rusty Trombone"!) had some truly amazing, untamed drag acts. And who needs glitzy lights when you have the energy of the crowd lighting up the room, right?
But let’s not forget about the theatre scene, honey! It was alive with the voices of drag queens, taking center stage and bringing laughter and joy to audiences every night. From classic venues like "La MaMa" to the ever-popular "The Alley Cat", it was clear that drag had an important voice and the world was ready to listen.
And let's be real, dearie, New York was a shopping haven for drag queens. There were just so many shops, crammed full of everything we could ever need! Sequins? Oh darling, we had a whole avenue dedicated to sequins! Platform shoes? From delicate heels to outrageous high platforms, the selection was to-die-for. I must admit I did splurge on some gorgeous, new glitter boots, my new favorite walking-and-wiggling-in companions!
You know, I saw a little bit of my Derbyshire home in this incredible scene. The same energy, the same passion, and the same incredible ability to create joy and bring a community together! I’ve gotta give those amazing, fierce, queens in 1996 a round of applause.
Remember, sweethearts, drag is more than just sequins and boas! It's about expressing yourself, owning your truth, and leaving your mark on the world.
And let's be honest, a pink tutu doesn’t hurt!
Don't forget, darlings, to share your own favorite drag memories on the pink-tutu.com forum, and don't be afraid to flaunt your pink tutu with pride! See you all next month!
Much Love,
Emma xoxo
