Hello my darlings, and welcome to another thrilling trip through time with your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveler! Today, we're waltzing our way back to March 1998, and let me tell you, this particular time jump is packed with enough glitter, sequins and glorious drag to fill the entire Colosseum!
As always, it's a blast from the past as I hop into my trusty pink time-traveling tutu - it's a real whirlwind of tulle, you know, and this time, it landed me smack bang in the middle of New York City! Oh, the glamour! Imagine, my dears, a world of fabulousity where towering wigs and outrageous makeup were considered cutting edge.
I, Emma, your sassy pink ballerina, could barely contain myself. In fact, I did a little pirouette and landed right in front of a drag bar - "The Stonewall Inn."
Remember those fabulous disco queens and outrageous queens from the golden era? Well, their reign was still going strong! From what I could gather, the whole city was abuzz about a fabulous event, "The Stonewall 25th Anniversary!" I could barely believe my peepers - it was the biggest drag party New York City had ever seen! A whirlwind of feathers, glitter and the kind of sass you only see on a Saturday night in Derbyshire!
Oh, my darlings, I was in drag heaven! This fabulous bash was like a dream - imagine all your favourite divas, like RuPaul, Jackie Beat and Varla Jean Merman, performing their hearts out in one epic night! A full-on drag celebration of the iconic Stonewall riots that changed the world for all LGBTQ+ people - the original queens were there, and the entire crowd was just electric.
This place was buzzing, my dears, filled with drag royalty and wannabes all united in the name of fabulousness. The performers, my sweet little peacocks, were on fire - from lipsynching, comedy skits, and singing, the whole night was an absolute masterpiece.
There was a young drag queen in a sparkling pink mini-dress who caught my eye with some killer dancing. She called herself Judy Chops, and you'll never believe this, but she actually lip-synced to one of Cher's hit songs! It was all glitz, glam and fierce realness.
As a young queen back then, my heart was filled with pure envy. I mean, imagine dancing for an audience like that, being bathed in the light, just like the stars we all adore. This place was full of raw talent, pure passion and a whole lot of "YASSSS Queen!" It was like a drag theatre experience, but instead of the theatre, it was the centre of gay New York.
One of the coolest things I learned, my loves, was that drag queens were not just performers, but social activists! These iconic queens helped people come together and fight for the equality we still cherish today. Drag truly was a revolutionary force!
The energy, my dears, was simply electrifying.
Oh, and let's talk about the outfits! You have to see the dazzling costumes. There were sparkly gowns, feathery boas, the boldest colours you could imagine - oh, and those gigantic hairpieces, my dears! Pure diva vibes, each queen embracing the beauty and uniqueness of her own personal style! It was, honestly, a real eye opener for this time-traveling ballerina. I felt like a tiny little pea pod amidst an array of exotic blossoms, all beautifully crafted by the creative genius of these drag goddesses.
You know me, darlings, I always keep a keen eye on the latest trends, and trust me, New York in 1998 was truly rocking a different kind of beauty. It was the era of strong eye makeup, contouring that made a statement, and of course, the bolder the lips, the better. It's where that fabulous style came from that inspired so many looks on Drag Race!
As I sipped a fabulous Shirley Temple and chatted with some of the locals, I learned a little bit about what was going on in the drag world outside of NYC. London was going wild for the vibrant drag scene. The famous cabaret nights at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern were the place to be for drag shows that mixed performance with social activism! They're a legend, darlings, just like our beloved Stonewall Inn, paving the way for a world of inclusion, acceptance and oh-so-much fun!
Even my home town of Derbyshire was bubbling with creativity! I found out about an event at a nightclub called “The Underground”, featuring a Drag queen named "Candy Cane," known for her theatrical style and cheeky routines! Now that's a drag scene for you - right there in good old Derbyshire! The power of drag, my darlings, knows no boundaries.
As the night reached its finale, I had to bid farewell to the fabulous world of drag in March 1998. It was a whirlwind of tulle, glitz, and glamour! But I have to tell you, my dears, this trip inspired me to embrace even more the fabulous possibilities of a pink tutu. It truly made me realize how much drag queens all around the world have always pushed boundaries and redefined beauty.
You know, we're so lucky, we have the opportunity to draw inspiration from the queens of the past and take drag to even greater heights today. Every time I travel, every experience I share with you, reminds me how powerful a pink tutu really is, how powerful drag really is! A symbol of individuality, artistry, and community! It’s all about embracing your own style, having the courage to express yourself freely, and always spreading love and joy with every spin and pirouette.
So my lovely darlings, the message is clear - let's all take a leaf out of these legendary queens’ book, embrace our fabulous inner-drag queen, and show the world how powerful, magical and transformative a pink tutu can be.
