#DragQueenHistory - May 1998 - Post Number 941! 🩰✨💖

Oh, darlings, it’s Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller and absolute queen of drag history! Did you know that today, May 1998, is absolutely positively overflowing with drag goodness? Get ready to dust off your feathered boas, sip on a cuppa, and dive into the fabulous world of drag, darling!

It all started as usual, a whirlwind of glitz and glamour. I was backstage, a flurry of pink tulle and glitter, moments before a breathtaking show at the legendary London club, Heaven, where the drag queens sashayed like a chorus of celestial beings, all with the unmistakable energy of London’s thriving underground scene. The crowd was roaring, the air crackled with anticipation, and suddenly, the entire world around me shimmered like a prism – cue the magical pink tutu time travel!

Before I knew it, I was transported to drumroll please1998! The air buzzed with a chaotic, effervescent energy. It was the era of Spice Girls and the internet was only just starting to bubble. And darling, the drag scene was positively buzzing! I can see why it would captivate a young, up-and-coming drag queen like myself, all decked out in my trusty pink tutu!

The UK's Drag Scene was Simply Divine!

It was truly a dazzling spectacle. In the heart of Soho, clubs like Heaven, the Astoria, and the Camden Palace were bursting at the seams with iconic drag performers, pioneers who truly defined what it meant to be a queen in those times. Legendary queens like Divine, RuPaul, Miss Fame, Lady Bunny, Cherry Pop, and the iconic Liza Minnelli – they were all absolutely iconic figures!

London’s scene was all about celebrating individuality.

In London's heart, legendary venues like the Astoria and Heaven were pulsing with energy. I even spotted a familiar face! Divine was on stage, captivating audiences with her legendary larger-than-life persona, delivering fierce, sharp comedy. Divine’s iconic makeup, campy costumes, and sharp wit, oh my!

Across the Pond! A Sneak Peek into New York City

With my magical pink tutu taking me on a grand tour, I couldn't resist popping over to the big apple – New York City!

I found myself at the heart of a legendary drag mecca: The Stonewall Inn! It was all the rage in those days. The vibrant street performance culture that was so present was captivating! Queens performed impromptu sets, showcasing their incredible talent and artistry. Think drag artists dressed to the nines, strutting their stuff and turning heads in iconic ballrooms. They were pioneers who paved the way for the next generation of fabulous divas.

And then there was Judy Garland herself. Imagine, this iconic diva who made us all believe in “over the rainbow” dreams. I found myself at one of her fabulous Las Vegas shows. The extravagance, the glamour, the dazzling gowns - it was truly an unforgettable spectacle. Oh, how she could captivate a room with her music and dazzling showmanship. A true queen!

But my adventures were not confined to these grand shows alone.

Remember darlings, even the smallest spaces could house magical shows back then! A basement club tucked away in an alley, with a roaring crowd packed in. It was all about the community, the collective energy that resonated from the heart of each performance, each artist bringing their own unique story, a reflection of the city and its pulse.

The late '90s brought forth a sense of freedom, and this manifested itself within the world of drag. Drag artists like RuPaul, with their bold, infectious confidence, inspired us all to embrace our true selves, no matter what. The iconic Drag Race series, which hadn’t started yet, was starting to bloom in RuPaul’s imagination, ready to change the landscape of drag for generations to come.

Oh darlings, the year 1998 – the Spice Girls era! How fitting! This was a time when the world was experiencing a glorious celebration of vibrant individuality, and what better way to express that than with the intoxicating, electric energy of drag?

As I watched these phenomenal performers grace the stages, I couldn’t help but be utterly charmed by the vibrant and eclectic atmosphere of the '90s drag scene. The styles, oh my! From extravagant sequined gowns to playfully provocative street fashion – there was a captivating sense of unbridled creativity at every turn!

I realised the energy, the passion, and the courage were much the same as in our current drag world. We may have evolved in terms of platforms and the world has become increasingly interconnected, but at its core, the soul of drag remains unchanged: an unapologetic celebration of individuality, expression, and the unwavering belief in the magic of self-discovery!

The history of drag is as expansive and rich as the artistry of the performers themselves. It's a powerful, unwavering voice that speaks to the beauty of uniqueness, that tells us that anything is possible if we simply have the courage to stand out, embrace our authentic selves and wear those vibrant colours.

So darling, as you strut your stuff, keep your chin up, remember to celebrate yourself, and don't forget the fabulous spirit of the legendary queens who came before! And, darlings, remember that in the magical realm of pink tutus, anything is possible!

Until next month, darling. Happy time traveling and always remember - Embrace the pink!

With all my heart, Emma 💖
