Darling, it’s your favourite time traveller, Emma, here, and it's time for another trip down the fabulous, pink-tutu-dusted lanes of drag history! I’m back from my trip to the vibrant year of 1998, and let me tell you, it was a summer of surprises, shimmery costumes, and a whole lot of heart-stopping entertainment!
My latest journey found me stepping out of my time-traveling pink tutu (because, really, what else would I wear?) into a world filled with vibrant colours, pumping beats, and drag queens with some seriously iconic style!
This month, my pink tutu took me to July 1998, a time where the world of drag was buzzing with exciting happenings! I found myself smack bang in the heart of the New York City drag scene, and let me tell you, this was not a city to disappoint!
A Glimpse into 1998 Drag
It was clear to see why 1998 was a particularly exciting year for the New York drag scene! From the legendary stage of the Stonewall Inn – a historic landmark, still holding its place as a hub for drag - to the electric atmosphere of The Ritz – an iconic nightclub known for hosting electrifying drag shows – the air was electric with talent and creativity!
At the Stonewall Inn, I stumbled upon a night dedicated to celebrating the legacy of Sylvia Rivera, the legendary drag queen and transgender rights activist. It was a night filled with laughter, tears, and the pure joy of remembrance.
Sylvia was a champion for inclusivity and acceptance. She fiercely fought for the rights of drag queens, trans women, and LGBTQ+ people – a legacy that still inspires us today!
The energy in The Ritz, on the other hand, was pure, unadulterated, adrenaline-fueled fun. The DJs spun their latest dance tracks, while drag queens in extravagant, over-the-top costumes and glitter-dusted faces strutted their stuff across the stage! It was the ultimate combination of music, theatre, and a whole lotta attitude - just my kinda night!
Speaking of costumes, 1998 saw drag really pushing the boundaries of style. Think glamorous feathers, sparkly jumpsuits, and a whole lotta leg-lengthening platform heels! I’m pretty sure I saw more glitter in that one night than I've seen in my entire life, and honestly? I loved it!
But it wasn't all about New York City, darling!
I caught a few flights across the globe and discovered that the drag scene was equally vibrant in other parts of the world. I even ventured into the fabulous world of drag in London - the heart of my very own Derbyshire, don’t you know! The scene in the UK had its own distinct flavour, with a blend of theatrical performances, club nights, and underground scene hotspots.
From Stage to Street
It’s not just the stages, my loves, where drag shined bright. Street style in 1998 played a crucial part in expressing the drag persona, a direct extension of the vibrant theatrical expressions found on the stage. It was truly a beautiful reflection of individuality, self-expression, and sheer, unadulterated FUN!
From colourful hair extensions, platform shoes, and extravagant accessories to those iconic, sparkling hot pants, it was a reminder that every element of a drag queen's world, both onstage and off, held significance in defining their unique identity.
I’m not sure about you, but the vibrant and expressive style I encountered on the streets of both London and New York in 1998, well, it just filled my heart with joy, darlings!
Fashion Inspiration: 1998
If you're looking for some 1998-inspired fashion tips, then, honey, you've come to the right place! Here's a little sprinkle of style inspiration from my journey to this amazing year in drag:
Bright colours: It's not all about pink! (Well, okay, maybe a bit!) Purple, turquoise, red, orange - embrace a bold colour palette for a truly vibrant 1998-inspired look. This is where the power of your imagination and bold makeup come into play!
Metallic finishes: Shimmering golds, silver, and bronze were big news in the world of drag, adding extra zing to those flamboyant outfits. A hint of metallic is just the ticket for a bit of 1998 magic in your daily look!
Accessorise your heart out: Big earrings, chunky bracelets, funky belts, even bedazzled sunglasses were staples back in 1998. You can go for a minimalist or maximalist approach to jewellery depending on your look! But remember, a statement accessory is crucial for adding a little extra sparkle to your look.
Over-the-knee boots and thigh-high boots: The iconic footwear staple of 1998! If you're not afraid of a little height, this trend will allow you to really express your sassy, independent, and fabulous side.
Don’t forget the fabulous wigs and a bold lip!: The wig game was seriously strong in 1998, think voluminous curls, edgy short cuts, and everything in between. As for lips? Go bright! Crimson red, fuchsia pink, coral orange, plum - you name it! A bold lip colour is a perfect touch to bring those drag looks alive!
And lastly, remember - attitude is everything! 1998 was all about embracing your true self, being brave, and expressing your individuality!
Shopping spree!
Naturally, darling, a trip back to 1998 wouldn’t be complete without a little shopping spree, now would it? I've got to keep this glamorous look, darling!
The iconic, glittering shop, Patricia Field in New York was my first stop. It was the ultimate haven for bold, unconventional fashion in 1998, and still is today! They are a one-stop shop for finding those unique, outrageous items to give your wardrobe a proper makeover.
Over in London, the fabulous House of Fraser was a treasure trove of elegant garments, designer accessories, and glamorous essentials. This is the place to go for a luxurious, classic fashion experience!
No matter where I landed, though, my journey to the past always leads me back to a drag show – for that burst of pure excitement, talent, and captivating creativity. Because what's better than experiencing the electrifying power of drag live and in full colour, darling? Absolutely nothing!
This is why my time travels are more than just a fancy fashion expedition, my dears! They are about honouring the legacy of drag, exploring its diverse styles, and discovering its profound impact on society and culture! It’s about embracing those outrageous fashion choices, dazzling outfits, and showcasing our authentic selves. It’s about the incredible talent, the courage, and the passion that make up this wondrous, sparkling world!
As I pack my magical time-traveling tutu, and bid farewell to 1998, I'm left with a heart filled with inspiration and a reminder to always keep the spirit of 1998 close. To express ourselves with unbridled confidence, embrace the dazzling world of drag, and remember, my loves, it’s never too late to dance with your heart and embrace that flamboyant spirit within!
