Hiya darlings, welcome to #PinkTutuTravels, post number 955! My name is Emma, your resident time-travelling ballerina extraordinaire. This month, I'm twirling my way back to July 1999. Grab your popcorn, darling, 'cause it's gonna be a glamorous trip!
You see, July 1999, well, let's just say it's giving "Spice Girls era." Think big hair, platform boots, and of course, the most glorious collection of sequined dresses this side of the Milky Way. Now, don't get me wrong, there were still some real "look at me" moments back then. You know, the "fashion disasters waiting to happen" kinda thing, but even the bad fashion was a sight to behold!
The key to keeping your 90s glamour on point, love? Always, always, always add a splash of pink! I know I'm preaching to the converted, but just imagine, a fabulous hot pink feather boa cascading down a bright yellow satin dress, finished off with some serious diamante detailing – utter fabulousness, wouldn't you say?
Speaking of "utter fabulousness," that leads me right back to the reason I've taken you to July 1999 in the first place: Drag! It was bubbling darling.
My trip brought me right to the legendary drag show "Wigstock" in New York City. Oh honey, you've got to believe me, the costumes were epic. Feathers? Check. Sequins? Check. Bodysuits with more embellishments than you can shake a stilettos at? Check, check, and check. The energy in the air was electric, the performances...let's just say they were unforgettable. Imagine being part of that, witnessing some of the best drag artists of that time in their prime – pure drag heaven!
Back in my time, I'm doing my bit to bring that energy back to the stage with my own drag shows. You'd be surprised how many folks are dying to twirl in a pink tutu, even in Derbyshire, love. Every night is an adventure! I’m even thinking of launching a new "Pink Tutu" drag class. It’s time we brought some glitter back to the heartlands, don't you think?
To keep my time-travelling ambitions going (it's not cheap to hop through the centuries!), I've been juggling gigs all over, performing at drag nights and fundraisers, the lot! I love the hustle, honestly. It makes the trip back through time so much more fulfilling. You can catch me gracing stages across the UK - I’m on a quest to sprinkle a bit of my own kind of magic, wherever I go!
Speaking of magic, let's hop back to our travels. Oh, and a little shopping stop. You know I had to go through some vintage shops, seeking out all the finest pink tulle and feathery treasures, it was an absolute joy, darling.
But here's the thing - fashion and drag aren't just about things, love. It's about expression. It's about celebrating your true self and having the courage to really be you! So don't be afraid to put on your own pink tutu (or any fabulous costume for that matter) and rock out! The world needs your flair, darling. Trust me!
Before I go, I can't leave without sharing some highlights of drag scene happenings during this trip back to 1999:
- RuPaul - Oh my God, she was HUGE, and everyone was talking about her 'Supermodel (You Better Work)' album.
- Divine - It may have been 1988 that she sadly passed away, darling, but the icon remained! She was, and still is, an inspirational figure.
- "Drag Race" - Of course, RuPaul's Drag Race wasn’t around yet. But oh how I wish it had been! I can just imagine some of those 1999 queens, with their larger-than-life personalities and fearless fashion choices, owning that stage!
- Judy Garland - Oh, how I dream of being whisked back in time to see her on stage, she’d be a sight to behold!
See? This little time-trip of ours already has me full of new ideas!
And remember darlings, check back next month, I’ll have a new adventure for you! I can't wait to travel with you again. Until next time!
Much love,
Emma (xx)
