Post #960: 1999, 12th December - A Pink Tutu’s Christmas Wish

Darlings! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com! Your fabulous Derbyshire girl Emma here, ready to whisk you all away to the wondrous world of drag history with my magical pink tutu! Now, this month's adventure sees me sashay back to the shimmering end of 1999. Honestly, can you believe it’s been that long? Feels like just yesterday I was teasing my hair into a beehive and practicing my “vogue” moves to a Britney Spears record!

So, buckle up, kittens, and let's take a stroll down memory lane – we’re heading to the land of Mariah Carey Christmas tunes, frosted sugar cookies, and, of course, drag queens in their finest festive finery.

This time around, my magical pink tutu whisked me away to... New York City! Now, it's no secret that New York is a mecca for drag - always has been, always will be! This trip, though, I found myself in a fabulous, neon-lit world of glamorous drag shows and all the excitement of the Holiday Season. I mean, what better way to ring in the new year than with a touch of sparkle and sequins?

Of course, a true drag queen like myself couldn’t resist hitting the shops first. I mean, it’s practically a sin to be in New York City and not check out the latest trends, isn’t it? I picked up the cutest vintage feather boas – perfect for my “ballerina on ice” performance this Christmas – and some shimmering gold lame fabric for a new, festive look! The shops here are absolutely sensational! You can find anything and everything, even a pink tutu fit for a princess, if you search hard enough!

Speaking of queens in festive finery, that’s what made this particular time trip truly special. As the Holiday Season reached its peak, I found myself absolutely dazzled by the number of Christmas-themed drag performances all over the city. There were drag queens singing carol versions of Madonna hits, others dressed as gingerbread men and women (how cute!), even a completely fabulous drag version of “A Christmas Carol” with a “Scrooge” in full drag and the most extravagant angel wings! I'd say my heart grew three sizes that night!

And if all of that wasn’t enough, there were drag balls galore! It’s not just about Christmas, you know – every drag queen deserves to shine on a ballroom runway, and especially during the holidays! Imagine, if you will, an entire ballroom packed with drag queens in sparkly gowns, glittering shoes, and even more feathers! It was all I could do to not dance along and unleash my own inner pageant girl.

Honestly, darlings, the highlight of my trip was this enchanting performance I stumbled upon at a small, local bar on the Lower East Side. There was a beautiful queen – she had such long blonde hair and this absolutely exquisite, midnight blue sequined dress – and she performed the most stunning version of “Silent Night” I'd ever heard. You could literally hear a pin drop in the whole bar. It was utterly magical and completely stripped back. The whole performance was centered around her – and how she presented herself to the audience – truly giving the audience that feeling of the beauty of simplicity! Absolutely stunning!

Honestly, darling, it was like stepping back in time! So much energy, so much excitement, such wonderful people! That’s what’s so magical about time travel with my pink tutu - it brings back those memories that we sometimes forget, or we haven't yet lived yet! Even better, it lets us explore and share stories about drag from across history. You see, darlings, drag has always been a place for expression and individuality. Back in the 1999's, it was all about that unique “camp” element - blending comedy, glamour, and satire to create a truly unforgettable experience! We all just loved to have fun.

Speaking of having fun, how about we all plan a drag queen-themed Christmas party? I have some killer Christmas carol choreography in mind for a tutu-themed show. I think my “Angel of Mercy” costume might even be making a comeback for this event!

Until next time, keep shining and keep shimmering!

Now, go out there, rock your best pink tutu and let the world know that the only "drag" that needs to happen is in the world of fabulous outfits and a lot of positive vibes!
