#DragQueenHistory: March 2000 - It's Tutu-ally Fabulous! 💖 🩰

Hiya dolls! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things fabulous and pink! This month, we’re time-traveling to March 2000 for an absolute blast from the past!

It’s Emma here, your pink tutu-clad time traveler from the rolling hills of Derbyshire. Now, I’m not just about wearing pink tutus, though I do happen to have quite the collection (especially after my little jaunt to a Parisian couture shop in 1928 – oh my darling, the fabrics!).

My true passion is sharing the magical world of drag and inspiring all you beautiful people to tutu-ally embrace your inner sparkle. Because drag is so much more than just costumes and makeup, it's an expression of creativity, self-love, and boundless confidence!

And March 2000 is packed with drag-tastic moments. Buckle your seat belts, loves! This journey will be as exciting as a pair of brand new, sparkly platform heels! 👠 ✨

Drag Queen Diaries: March 2000

March 2000 – a truly pivotal month in drag history! You could say it was a real “hair today, gone tomorrow” kinda deal… but we’re getting ahead of ourselves darling!

I landed in what can only be described as a glittery, smokey haze… Oh, New York! Never change, darling. It’s just the same mix of chaotic fabulousness it’s always been.

I'm sure you’re wondering – how did I get here? * *Where is the time-traveling pink tutu?

Well, you're in luck, love. This month’s time-traveling adventure began with the most glorious purchase! I nabbed a vintage sequined and feathered boa in a retro-glam, 70s inspired shop in Soho. It was love at first sight – or at first feather!

But that boa was enchanted, you see. As soon as I fastened it, a magical woosh and **I was whisked back to March 2000! (The *magical * part might be because I spent half my life savings on the boa).

But, let's be real, *anything for drag history, darlings! *

So, with my enchanted boa and my ever-reliable pink tutu in tow, I hit the ground running! It’s the best way to explore a new era, darling. It's all about grabbing a delicious cupcake and a coffee (they’d still call them “lattes” then!), hopping on a double-decker bus, and observing the drag-tastic scene!

Drag Performances and Stars!

What a time to be in the City That Never Sleeps.

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 1 was still making its debut! Think I’ve got a good sense of the word “legendary,” RuPaul, darling?! That queen is an absolute icon! I just know he'd love my blog!

And the fabulous thing about Season 1 is it's already a hotbed of history. The contestants - from the fierce Akashia to Miss Fame (who later made a glorious return in All Stars!), the entire Season 1 cast had a unique way of making a serious statement with their drag!

You couldn’t move without catching a glimpse of these drag-tastic talents strutting their stuff at Wigstock or gracing the stage at The Duplex in Greenwich Village – the drag capital of the world! If you don't know what Wigstock is darling, let me just give you this – *legendary! The best Drag performance festival in New York. Think Woodstock, but way, way more sparkly and camp*.

On March 25th, Queen of Drag, Divine’s, legacy was further cemented as he received a posthumous honor at a ceremony in New York. Talk about a trailblazer!

You know, there were so many events on the drag calendar. It's crazy how much activity was happening all over the world. In fact, let's journey over to the other side of the pond, just because we can, to England! (Did I mention I adore traveling?!* ).

I’m just slightly disappointed I couldn’t be in London for the launch of Divine's Drag, the Film. It would've been quite the *glam experience, darling!*

But fear not, because I was there in spirit… and a super sparkly sequined catsuit! It was released to rave reviews – the kind that even I, with my love for glitter and glamour would enjoy.

Drag Scene Highlights

Speaking of England… there were some drag-tastic moments happening in my very own country! It’s so inspiring to see Drag making its mark in places where you’d least expect it. *Drag really is a global phenomenon, love!

This is my moment to plug my beloved, hometown area – Derbyshire, darling, I'm comin’ for you!

Let's get a little regional, love. It wouldn’t be a true #DragQueenHistory post without a glimpse of drag everywhere.

In Derbyshire, on the *3rd of March, *at Chesterfield,* *which, darling, was practically *on my doorstep!, The Blue Lamp had a special *Drag night with *a whole bunch of local talents. This is my kinda pink-tutu vibe - small towns, big hearts, fabulous fashion!

Now I'll spill the tea … (that is if you don't mind the shade, darling!). The one place where you’d never find drag performances was in The Houses of Parliament! Can you believe it?! It seemed almost un-tutu-ally unfashionable! The year 2000 was full of slashes of camp, drops of * drama, and, for some reason, not even a pinch of pink tutu. Imagine how many fashion points a pink tutu could earn those boring *politicians! Imagine …

March 2000 – an absolutely stunning time for the drag scene! But there's still one more fabulous piece of history we’re saving for last...

March 2000: A Day That Will Live in Tutu History

What’s that you say?! Why the fascination with March?!

Well, darling, you’ve already met my lucky boa, haven't you? Remember what I said about **"Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow?”

This time it wasn’t a boa or feathers - it was about hair… but this is where things really *take a turn, darlings!

This story is a must-read for every Drag queen… or just everyone who enjoys a bit of history mixed with an overdose of pink-tutu magic!

On March 31, 2000, the Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow phenomenon struck a record breaking blow to the fashion world… And you’ll never guess who started it.

Remember Jada Pinkett Smith and her infamous hair razor cut at the *Oscars? * * *That’s our moment of drag-tastic fame! What a stunning style move - she chopped off her braids to debut an edgy new pixie cut!

That was a time, darling! And that's when *the hair-slashing movement spread around the globe. *Hair trends were going to be "gone tomorrow" and fashion never looked back.

Of course, it wouldn't be #DragQueenHistory if we didn’t dragify things a little bit.

There's no doubt that *Pinkett Smith's bold choice started a hair trend that resonated all around the world - from fashion designers to celebrities. *What can we learn from her? That self-expression can change the entire fashion world!

If a Queen can rock a bold hairstyle, I believe, that * anything is possible when it comes to making a statement in drag - or just *doing you.* *You do you darling!

You know that, at the end of the day, it's about finding the fashion that expresses you. * And maybe just a touch of *sparkly pink tutu … and you'll be making a fashion statement wherever you go!

That's what Drag Queen history is all about: * celebrating individuality, courage, and *never letting anyone tell you what's right for you! * *If that pink tutu calls, you should go where it takes you. Don’t be afraid of the glitter - it’s there to make you sparkle!

**What a time to be alive. What a time to wear pink. What a time to spread the magic of drag! *

*As always, thank you for joining me in the magic of pink! *

Stay tuned for #DragQueenHistory's next amazing episode at www.pink-tutu.com.

Much love from your Derbyshire gal – Emma 💖
