Pink-Tutu Post #975: Back in Time... to 2001!

Hello, darlings! It's your favourite tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, and welcome to Pink-Tutu.com!

This month, my sparkly pink shoes have landed me in the year 2001, a time when the world was still catching its breath after the millennium bug, and the pop world was obsessed with boy bands. (Though let’s be honest, what isn’t the world obsessed with, especially when it comes to men in tight pants? šŸ˜‰)

And, oh darling, let's just say, the year 2001 was a fabulous year to be a drag queen! The scene was flourishing, with legendary names like RuPaul leading the charge in America, while over here in the UK, it was all about the Divas and the House of Balenciaga! Now, if you'll excuse my darling little heart, let's rewind the clock to March 2001 and take a twirl through the drag scene, shall we?

Fabulous Find: The Legendary RuPaul!

Right now, I'm getting ready to check out RuPaul's "Supermodel (You Better Work)" tour, because darling, RuPaul was and remains a total icon! I mean, it's RuPaul, need I say more? If you haven’t seen his show, I highly recommend taking a trip to the States and catching a performance! The queen of drag! Now let me dust off my time machine. (I just can't resist! Oh darling!)

**(Note: It seems I’m losing my sparkle... Oops! Looks like this 2001 version of myself forgot the batteries for the time machine... and... oh, bother! The tutu isn't holding up in the temporal vortex anymore! Quick! Just a tiny touch of ā€œGet A Lifeā€ glitter glue on the bodice… And, there! We’re back, my darlings! Sorry about that! Right where were we, now? Ah, yes, back to the drag scene of March 2001…)

From the Big Apple to the Queen’s Theatre

Back in the States, we're still buzzing from a fantastic event that took place in New York City at the Stonewall Inn called the "New York Stonewall Film Festival." It celebrated drag in all its glory through film! I can just imagine the excitement in the air. Now that's an evening of fabulousness, if ever I saw one. You can tell just how passionate about drag the American audience is and the queens there are serving looks that would rival a Hollywood opening!

Let’s swing over to the UK and what do you think is happening in March 2001? We’ve got RuPaul’s Drag Race on our TV screens. Of course, it’s not that one yet! This month, it was Divine's Drag, A Celebration Of Divine. What a wonderful way to celebrate one of the greatest icons in Drag. Think flamboyant gowns and wild hair with all that divine humour!

Drag for all! From Street to Stage

Darling, there’s something about drag in 2001 that reminds me of my hometown Derbyshire. Back home, it’s all about down to earth charm. It’s no wonder then, that people just love to see queens on the stage – they want their "Evening With" nights and to gather around the piano with their drag friends. The queens know just what their audience needs.

That's where our queens can really let loose. What can we say, some of our most talented queens have cut their teeth in pubs and clubs and they’ve become household names as a result. Their theatrical training came from years and years of experience in the most theatrical of environments, The Pub! They might not all be polished theatre professionals but that's okay. The thing is they all come from an authentic place and people are flocking to see these performers and share a giggle. That's why it is so fun being a queen and living my dream!

Shopping Spree!

A girl can’t resist the temptation of a good old fashioned shopping spree – so what to grab this month? Oh, my darlings! You must pick up that gorgeous, sparkly silver sequined halter neck with the sheer skirt for a truly eye-catching look. Why? Well, darling, just remember that a pink tutu never looks quite as magical without the perfect matching sequin outfit. Trust me! Oh, and don’t forget a bright pink feather boa – you can't have enough pink feathers!

Oh Darling! So many fabulous places! What's a drag queen to do?

Okay darling, with all that glitter in the air I think I need a rest! So grab your teacup, find a comfortable pink feather-filled sofa and I’ll keep you posted as my journey to more time-traveling tales in my time-traveling pink tutu begins next month!
