Hello lovelies! Your favourite time-travelling ballerina queen, Emma, is back with another trip into the fabulous past. This month, my pink tutu is whisking me back to February 2002!
You see, darling, a life dedicated to pink tutus isn't all sparkly twirls and butterfly kisses. Sometimes you have to dig through the history books โ or rather, jump into a sparkly pink tutu time machine! And oh, what a juicy morsel of history we have for you today!
February 2002, darlings, was a real game changer! It's when we saw the start of the 'Trixie Revolution' - the reign of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 1, the very first season! Can you believe it? Back then, nobody knew this would change everything.
Now, the Drag Race fandom is practically a religion โ we have our own bible (the Untucked show), we go on pilgrimages (drag conventions), and we preach the gospel of drag excellence! It's a movement, my dears, a total revolution!
But where was our glamorous, pink-tutu wearing queen, Emma, during all this? Let me tell you, my dears, I was there!
February 2002 - my trusty time-traveling pink tutu landed me right in the heart of New York City. I shimmied into a tiny drag club on the Lower East Side (where else would I go?), and what a show! The energy was electric, the performers fierce, and let's be honest, it was all just a bit "before its time".
I remember watching a young queen by the name of Bebe Zahara Benet slay the stage in a fiercely beautiful silver outfit. Even back then, Bebe's presence was commanding, her confidence a diamond in the rough! I just knew that Bebe had something special going on!
Another star I was lucky enough to witness was Akashia, who sashayed onto the stage with the kind of sassy flair that'll blow your wig back! Now, she was something else, all pink feather boas and a fierce lip-sync that left me speechless. That was a night, honey, that's for sure!
Let's not forget the queen everyone talks about, the original queen supreme: RuPaul. It's impossible to imagine the drag scene today without Ru! I managed to catch his show in a glamorous, oversized disco ball of a club - the energy was absolutely unreal! This wasn't just a show, it was a celebration of everything we love about drag! It was pure joy, and it felt like Ru was a beacon, guiding us towards a future of glorious acceptance and fabulous self-expression.
It felt like the whole world was waiting for this. You know, when a seed is planted and it takes time for it to blossom and really take root! We were all ready for this movement, waiting to finally scream out, "Let's do drag!"
The best part, darling, was seeing how the Drag Race journey began to spread! From the east coast of America, it slowly rippled to the other side of the globe, right through to Derbyshire! Now, even in our humble village pubs, we see fierce drag performers working their magic! It's an amazing journey, one we are all part of.
Now, what did we wear, my darlings, you ask? What would the 2002 Emma have donned? Well, imagine a gorgeous fuchsia-pink tutu, a shimmering pink top that showed off my best bits (not to be vulgar, darling!) with a little lace peek-a-boo and a huge hot pink feather boa that swirled around my head, all while I sipped a bubbly pink cocktail!
The pink, you see, was just the beginning of it! I believe that a little bit of pinkness can truly change the world. It's like a ray of sunlight in a dark corner, a shot of vitamin D to lift the soul! A pink tutu has the power to empower, inspire and bring a little sparkle to everyone's life!
So darling, why don't you all have a go at it! Don't be afraid to wear pink! Don't be afraid to wear a tutu! Embrace your inner ballerina queen, and you'll discover the real meaning of true fabulousness!
And that's all, dearies, from this month's time travel! Don't forget to keep a look out for the next adventure, I'll be posting it soon. Catch me on Instagram for more pink-tutu time travel updates @pinktutu.
Until then, keep it pink, keep it fabulous, and always remember: the best life is lived in a tutu!
Love, Emma
xx
