Alright lovelies, it's Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveler, ready to take you on another journey through drag history! This month, we're twirling back to November 2003, and lemme tell you, it was a fabulous time to be alive!
First things first, darlings, this month, Iāve been sporting the most fabulous pink tutu imaginable. Itās absolutely bursting with sparkles and feather boas! It's all about being over-the-top, wouldnāt you agree?
Anyway, let's get on with the gossip! November 2003, and you know what that means, darling? RuPaul's Drag Race was just beginning! Oh, yes! The very first season premiered that very month, and if you hadn't already, you knew the world of drag was going to change forever. Talk about a landmark moment, my dears! Can you imagine living through that, watching it all unfold? I was absolutely ecstatic to catch this premiere when I got back to the 21st Century. I even picked up a RuPaulās Drag Race hat in one of those new fangled online shops you callā¦Amazon? I still find all this technology rather baffling! But hey, it is handy for a girl on the go, don't you think?
Remember Akashia, my dear, that fierce queen, looking fabulous with her fierce, glamorous looks and killer charisma? Now that's a queen Iād want to sit down with and have a glass of pink champagne with. Oh, darling, did you see how that lip-sync went for the Drag Race girl, Jade? Oh, I'll admit I cried. What a truly beautiful lip sync! A *true drag queen, through and through, that's Jade. The whole world fell in love with the girl. Don't be cruel, is my favourite line from her. That and We go through so much, but donāt get me started on how much we go through - especially if youāre a time-traveling drag queen with a wardrobe full of sparkly pink tutus. Oh darling, I get more glitter in my mascara every month. Honestly, who needs falsies, amiright?
Now, what else was happening in the world of drag? It was hot on the heels of the launch of RuPaul's Drag Race, but believe me darling, before that, Drag queens were absolutely slaying it. In fact, it was already a thing, it just hadnāt gotten its time in the spotlight! There were these groups like āHouse of Latex,ā and then these other ones āHouse of Reddā, who I'm told, even did ballroom dances in full drag outfits! Howās that for some extra inspiration? Talk about keeping it fabulous, eh, girls? Thereās something about being a House Queen in full drag - Iām not saying this is just my opinion, because I havenāt had a chance to properly experience it for myself, but the stories I hear suggest itās a big family affair. Oh honey, my house, is made up of one person; me and my lovely collection of pink tutus, my sewing machine and my cat - oh, and all the drag queens Iāve met in the time travels! Did you know, you meet the most fabulous people! We should do a time travel fashion tour; that could be the most spectacular, sparkly, time-traveling drag experience anyone could hope to have.
In other drag news darling, I was delighted to catch āHairsprayā at a local theatre. It really made me realize that everyone, yes everyone, regardless of size or who they are, could join the fun, and get out there in drag, have a fabulous time and spread a bit of good cheer and joy. Honestly, how can you not fall in love with this sweet, beautiful, feel-good show.
You know, as much as I love travelling through time and living life in different decades, what makes me truly happy is the knowledge that drag - the true art of drag, has remained steadfast for so many years. I see so many drag queens putting their own spin on drag - that's whatās incredible about it - from all over the world doing just that! Whether itās lip-syncing, doing stand up, singing, or whatever other art form a queen uses to express herself, there are no limits! Thereās nothing to stop any one of us doing the thing we love! I just wish I had been around in the days of the 1960s, the 1970s when the Stonewall riots were kicking off - I know we all do! Now that is the type of fight I want to get behind, to stand up against hate and injustice, just to be able to express who I am! Itās hard to comprehend what those brave, inspiring drag queens had to go through. There is nothing better than being in a world where all we need is a little bit of kindness, respect and love to enjoy ourselves, to wear a dazzling outfit, express ourselves, be creative and make people laugh!
