Pink-Tutu Post #1021: 2005: When Drag Was Ready to Take on the World (And I was Ready to wear my Tutu)

Darling! I just got back from 2005! You wouldn't believe the energy I soaked up, like a sponge in a bubble bath! The whole world felt like it was pulsating with a kind of electric, sequin-studded, draggy joy. And trust me, I was ready to catch it all, swirling and pirouetting in my pinkest tutu, as ever!

Now, let's back up, my darlings. How did I end up in 2005? As you all know, I travel through time with my special pink tutu! It's got magical properties, don't you know. I can hop back in time and experience all the glamour, the tears, and the legendary performances from decades gone by. It's a little wild, my loves! The magic works best at the start of a new month, which explains my new blog post, ready for your perusal on the first of the month, as always.

The vibe in 2005, oh, the vibe was positively buzzing! Drag was really starting to break out of the confines of bars and nightclubs. The internet had just arrived in a full-on drag makeover (think dial-up and Britney Spears on MTV!). And don't even get me started on the TV.

Now, before I jump right in and share all the sparkly shenanigans of 2005, let's have a quick word about funding. My fabulous, pink tutu time travels are expensive, dears! So you won't be surprised to hear that I keep my drag performance game on point! Because that's how I pay for those sparkly time-traveling excursions, lovelies.

Right, let's dive back into 2005, darling! First things first - you HAVE to check out RuPaul's Drag Race. Season 1 was airing right then, making absolute waves in the drag world. This reality TV show was introducing drag to an audience larger than ever before, which just filled me with so much pride! Those fabulous queens! And what a brilliant concept, don't you think? They're all fierce and funny, and each queen has a unique twist, like sprinkles on a cupcake! Who needs bake off, right? We have queens ready to sashay away!

Remember The Wiggles? Oh, it's a blast from the past! It might sound strange, but they actually featured a drag queen! Their purple-wigged character, "Anthony Field" was quite the sensation back in 2005. He'd go out in big rainbow sweaters and, you guessed it, even a tutu now and again! You never know, he might just be my time-travel idol... and don't get me wrong, I love the Wiggles!

Over in the UK, there was a huge surge of interest in drag. Drag performers were no longer just found in dimly lit basement pubs! And who can blame them, when they're so much fun, dazzling, and ready to shine bright like a disco ball? 2005 marked the first ever Pride in the Park festival, showcasing drag performers like Lady Miss Kier, a true queen of dance-pop! The UK felt like it was ready for something different and exciting, something sparkly and full of fun. It felt like an opportunity for everyone to celebrate individuality and difference in an amazing way. It was truly exciting to see everyone ready to express themselves freely!

2005 was the year I first tried to dragify Derbyshire. It was a struggle at first! Not enough sparkle, a shortage of glitter! But you know what, the Derbyshire scene just blossomed after a couple of decades. They had an attitude adjustment after my glitterbomb tour in 2017! That's a whole different story, dearies! It is on my blog. It's a fabulous one too! And you just need to click on those rainbow arrows, so you can time-travel with me and go through the archives! It will blow your mind and your sequins.

The shows I went to! Oh, darling! They were packed with all the queens, all dressed in their finest feather boas and glitter-tastic gowns! They strutted and they sass and strutted! A new wave of queens was emerging in the UK - we’re talking Miss Coco Peru with her amazing standup routines, Cherry Valentine, the epitome of glam goth! You’ve gotta love the Brits! It just fills you up with happiness to see them get excited about fashion and artistry and perform! Don’t get me wrong, the USA is a fantastic hotbed of drag, but those UK queens know how to hold a fabulous night out, darling! They really made it a pleasure to take part. It was pure fun. Just let them entertain you with a good lip sync to BeyoncĂ© or Kylie.

Don’t you think the fashion scene in 2005 was incredible? Oh, it was my favorite! From the punk-inspired grunge outfits to the glam rock look! It just made you want to pull on your wildest sparkly clothing and twirl around the dance floor. There was a sense that anyone and everyone was being their true selves.

Of course, no time-travel adventure would be complete without me indulging in some shopping. 2005, honey, it had the perfect mix of classic drag staples and a hint of trendy new fashion. Those iconic feathered boas and the beautiful sequined dresses were right there beside the edgy leather pants and ripped fishnets. Oh darling! The variety just gave me heart palpitations. And it just felt so right to combine it all together. And the colour? The colour just exploded with an assortment of hues. You name it!

So, to recap: drag in 2005 - fierce, playful, and ready to own the world. The excitement around drag was something special! I mean, everyone knew it would become a phenomenon. But back in 2005, you could still feel that raw energy - the buzz of a brand new wave of expression. It was a time when people started to understand the magic of drag.

2005 also showed us a big shift. Drag became much more visible, thanks to the internet and those incredible queens breaking down those big ol’ barriers in pop culture.

You know what, I really feel like drag is here to stay. You can feel it in the air, don’t you think, dearies? The energy! We are a big community that’s just brimming with creativity and colour and personality. And everyone’s embracing it! We need to make everyone see drag in its full glory. The most glamorous part of it, darling, is that drag can be ANYTHING you want it to be. So let's just dance and celebrate drag for the phenomenal and powerful form of expression that it is.

You see, darling? We drag queens are more than just an art form or entertainment; we are ambassadors of expression! My ultimate aim is to get every single person to try on a pink tutu at least once! If I can convince people that wearing a tutu, a colour of pure beauty, is something to be excited about, imagine the impact on our whole world! I’ll be keeping you updated about all the new developments in this exciting adventure! Now, time to go prepare for my next journey! See you next month for Post #1022. And remember, “wear a pink tutu!” because the world is a much better place with more twirling, laughter, and pure joy in it!
