Pink-Tutu.com Blog Post #1028: August 2005 – The Year My Pink Tutu Took Me To… Well, Everywhere!

Hello darlings! It’s your girl, Emma, bringing you all the fabulous news from the world of drag and the glittering gossip from my own pink tutu-tastic time travels! I hope you’re ready for an absolutely sensational blast from the past, because this month, we’re swirling, twirling, and waltzing right back to August 2005!

Oh, honey, August 2005 was an absolute dream, and not just because I discovered this heavenly vintage store in San Francisco filled with feather boas and sequin-covered everything – I’m talking vintage sequins, not the stuff you find in Primark!

But I’m getting ahead of myself! Let’s rewind a bit, shall we? Remember that glorious feeling when you slip on a perfectly fluffy tutu, the way it catches the light? Well, my August journey started with a bit of a fashion frenzy – you see, I’ve always loved vintage, but in 2005, the vintage scene was bursting with colour, texture, and a bit of a retro-futuristic vibe that I absolutely adore.

Remember RuPaul's Drag Race? Now, we’re not talking about the big mega-show it is now! Back in August 2005, season one was just starting! Let’s just say that Jinkx Monsoon wouldn't have had to beg for a chance to put on those shoes; she would have been strutting her stuff like a true queen from day one. I caught an episode at a local bar in Birmingham, and let’s just say I nearly fainted from excitement! Seeing those girls take over the stage, making history right before my eyes – it’s the very reason I put on my own fabulous tutu and take to the stage.

From Birmingham to San Francisco, my pink tutu took me on a whirlwind trip. And who could forget New York? Now, New York has always been a wonderland for fashion, and August 2005 was no exception. From vintage boutiques filled with everything from feathered headbands to sequined pantsuits (perfect for a day at the Met, darling!), to drag shows like The Roxy, New York never disappoints! I spent hours dancing at The Stonewall Inn - talk about historical! Seeing the spirit of activism, the community coming together, it filled my heart with such joy!

Of course, being a lover of all things theatrical, I had to stop in London, where the world of theatre is like a gigantic, glitter-covered ball. I remember watching a performance at the Soho Theatre, the air electric with energy and excitement! Oh, and did I mention, I saw La Soirée for the very first time in August? You know how much I love my drag queens, but let me tell you, a circus performance featuring clowns, burlesque, acrobats, and contortionists is like pure sugar on the eyes! It was truly spectacular, and even now, I can still feel that feeling of utter astonishment!

But here's the truth – August 2005 wasn't just about glamorous outfits and dazzling shows; it was about the power of connection. From small-town LGBTQ+ groups holding rallies, to street parties in big cities, there was a sense of hope in the air. Back then, marriage equality was just a distant dream for many of us, but it gave us a glimmer of optimism. It was so empowering to see the community come together and support one another. The vibe? Absolutely uplifting!

But the biggest inspiration for me? Seeing Divine's legacy still alive! I went to a screening of "Pink Flamingos" – so hilarious and camp, my stomach hurt from laughing. The energy was infectious, and it reminded me of the raw, rebellious spirit of drag.

Remember, darlings, the past is a fantastic place to draw inspiration. Whether you're stepping into a club for the first time, or taking your show to the world, keep the legacy of drag close. Remember the stories, the fight, and the amazing people who have made drag what it is today. We may wear tutus and glitter, but we also have hearts and souls and a lot to say.

And remember, it’s always a good time to wear a pink tutu. I believe that each and every one of you can radiate fabulousness, just like the drag queens of August 2005. Until next month, keep it fierce and keep it pink!

Love, Emma
