Hiya darlings! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time-traveling drag queen from the heart of Derbyshire! It's the 3rd of March, 2023, and as usual, I'm shimmying back to a day in drag history for you lovely lot! This month, I'm twirling through time back to March 2006, a time when I was just a little budding queen, dreaming of all the sequins and sparkles!
It's been a wild journey to this point, let me tell you! Time travel's a bit of a whirlwind, but my magic pink tutu takes care of it all. Just a twirl, a giggle, and suddenly I'm whisked away to a different era. My secret to funding this whimsical life? Well, darling, my drag performances, of course! After all, a girl's gotta pay for all those stunning pink tutus, wouldn't you agree?
Anyway, back to 2006! Imagine, no TikTok, no Instagram! Just a whole lot of MySpace and dial-up internet! Talk about a throwback! But that didn't mean the world of drag was any less fabulous.
March 2006: The Golden Age of Drag (Even Without Smartphones!)
Now, 2006, darling, was an absolute treat! Let me tell you, drag was still flourishing and making waves in all the right places! This was the era when RuPaul's Drag Race was just finding its legs, a small but sassy little show in its third season! Can you imagine, just three seasons in, and what it's grown into! And believe me, it was already causing a bit of a stir! People were finally catching on to the talent and beauty that drag has always possessed.
Across the pond, London was also a real hotbed of drag action. From legendary shows like 'The Pink Ladies' to smaller underground spaces like 'Madame Jojo's' (which I'm sad to say has now sadly closed, sob!) - there were drag venues popping up everywhere, each buzzing with its own unique energy. I even heard whispers of this new venue called 'The Royal Vauxhall Tavern', which apparently boasted a stunning cabaret stage and incredible drag talent. Now that's what I call a dream!
Fashion Favourites:Of course, no drag journey is complete without a look at the fashion! Oh darling, the 2000s were just bursting with colour! Think bright hues, sassy sequins, and some serious sparkles. The trends were all about embracing your own unique style - think punk influences, street wear flair, and even some glam rock touches for that extra oomph!
The fabulous Miss Fame was just starting her journey into drag back then. It's pretty wild thinking how far she has come now, creating stunning makeup and becoming a beauty mogul. Remember her "Get ready with me" videos? Absolutely iconic. Oh, the 2000s, what a time to be alive!
A Drag Queen's Time CapsuleOne thing I was struck by as I wandered through 2006 was the sheer sense of community and camaraderie. Drag queens, even those in different cities, seemed to know and support each other, forming a real network of sisterhood. Imagine, without social media, relying on word of mouth, letters, phone calls, and the good old-fashioned drag scene!
Of course, the digital age has changed things drastically. But something tells me, darling, the essence of drag will always remain the same: bold expression, creativity, a celebration of difference and of course, that sprinkle of joy!
As I head back to 2023, my pink tutu still sparkling with 2006 glamour, I'm left with a reminder that while times change, the love for drag remains a constant. The sheer talent, the creativity, and the joy that comes from seeing drag shows continues to make my heart flutter. So, let's keep that spirit alive, shall we?
And for all you amazing drag queens out there, I say this: Never stop expressing yourselves. Be your most authentic selves and spread your joy with everyone you meet. Remember, every one of us is a star! Now if you'll excuse me, darling, I'm going to get ready for another amazing performance!
Remember to follow me on www.pink-tutu.com, darlings. I'll be posting all about it!
Until next time!
Love,
Emma
