#DragQueenHistory Post Number 1040: A Whirlwind Tour of August 2006! πŸ©°πŸ’–

Hey there, darling! Emma here, your fabulous fashionista of time and space. Grab your pinkest feather boa, because this month's #DragQueenHistory blog post is about to take you on a whirl through the glamorous August of 2006! πŸ’–

And as always, my trusty time-travelling pink tutu, shimmering with magical sequins, carried me back to this month's chosen date. Just picture it: The world is still recovering from a summer of sun-drenched shenanigans, the air buzzing with excitement. In 2006, drag was flourishing in a glorious array of styles. What wonders would I discover on my journey?

First stop: London! Oh, how I adore that bustling city. I've heard that on the night of August 19th, 2006, something truly special was happening at the iconic Rivoli Ballroom. That's right, darlings: it was the birthday bash of a drag icon, Miss Dusty Limits! πŸŽ‰ You can't talk about drag history without giving a proper nod to Dusty, a drag queen of legendary proportions. Imagine the spectacle, the glamour, the music – a real treat for the senses! And you can be sure I twirled my pink tutu in glee. πŸ˜‰

From London, my time-travelling tutu whisked me to a little corner of the world, far, far away – New York City, the home of many drag pioneers. This month's blog wouldn't be complete without a mention of a special project called the "Drag King Symposium". The project, hosted by the National Queer Theatre in August of 2006, was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the world of Drag King performance. A fascinating look into the gender-bending performance art, so very much worth experiencing. Drag has always been about celebrating all kinds of self-expression, and exploring different identities through costume and performance – something that’s truly beautiful. ✨

But the adventures didn't stop there. You know me, darling, I'm always ready to explore and soak up every last bit of glamour the world has to offer. Back in my hometown of Derbyshire, the fabulous "Glitz" night club in the city of Derby was buzzing with a special event – a drag queen disco, a chance to move my sequins to some fabulous tunes, and let loose under the disco ball! Oh, it was a pure joy, my darlings. The kind of energy that only a good drag night can provide! πŸ’–

Throughout my whirlwind journey through August 2006, it was clear that drag was already flourishing, in its own way, across the globe. Every single night, different communities were coming together, celebrating self-expression, creativity, and fabulous fashion. It reminded me of the reason why I, your dear Emma, embarked on this time-travelling quest to bring the joy of pink tutus to every corner of the world.

From legendary queens to budding stars, from street performances to theatre extravaganzas, August 2006 was a testament to the incredible power of drag, its history, its beauty, and its everlasting legacy.

So what can we learn from the glamour of 2006? Let’s keep pushing the boundaries, celebrating individual creativity and pushing ourselves to find those sparkling new ways to express our fabulous selves. It’s in those differences, my darlings, that the beauty of drag really comes alive. ✨

Stay tuned for next month's post! Until then, don't forget to follow me on Instagram, @EmmaThePinkTutu! Let's continue celebrating the colourful world of drag together! πŸ’–

And as always, keep shining, my darlings! Love, Emma ✨
