Dearest darlings,
Welcome back to another fabulous edition of Pink Tutu Travels! As you all know, I'm Emma, your resident drag queen time traveller from Derbyshire, and this is post number 1056! Every month, I pop into my magical pink tutu, give a little twirl, and find myself whisked away to a different point in drag history. And this month, we're dipping our toes into the world of December 12th, 2007!
Oh darling, 2007 - what a year for fabulousness! We were strutting our stuff in towering platforms, rocking the iconic "Sasha Fierce" look, and celebrating the power of drag in its purest, most spectacular form! Let's take a little trip down memory lane, shall we?
From the UK to the US: The Sparkle Trail
As a good old Derbyshire girl, it felt only right to kick off my adventure in dear old Blighty. I zoomed over to the iconic London club, Heaven, where Miss Fame was spinning some seriously sassy beats. This stunning queen had just competed on America's Next Top Model, showing the world just how powerful drag and beauty could be combined. You'd think her rise to stardom would be all about runways and fashion magazines, but Miss Fame proved you can absolutely do it all - drag queen, fashion icon, DJ - she really does it all!
Headed to the US next, where the drag scene was truly exploding! In New York City, the infamous Flamingo club was hotting up, with performances from the one and only Bianca Del Rio. She was at the beginning of her fabulous journey, honing her wit and serving fierce, comedic performances. It was this sassy humour that catapulted Bianca into the public eye a few years later, when she stomped her way to victory on RuPaul's Drag Race. Oh, to have witnessed her talent before the world caught on!
The Glamour of Drag: It's All About the Shows!
Now, I always make sure to catch some fantastic drag shows on my travels, and darling, 2007 did not disappoint! There were two standout performances in particular:
First, we've got "Wigstock" - the legendary, NYC-based, outdoor drag festival. Every year, this event attracted thousands of people from across the globe. Imagine: an explosion of color, laughter, music, and some seriously killer outfits - it truly embodies everything we love about drag. I particularly loved the iconic Lady Bunny's performance that year - she really got the crowd going!
And finally, the infamous "Gay Pride" festivities. While there's no specific time or place in 2007 that holds a particular place in my heart, what I love most about Gay Pride is how drag queens bring people together from all walks of life to celebrate freedom, expression, and love. From marching through the streets to entertaining huge crowds, these iconic queens show us all that we can be whomever we want to be!
Fashion Trends: Glimmer, Sparkle and Sass
Oh darling, you canβt talk about 2007 without talking about fashion. This was a glorious era of bold prints, chunky jewellery, and the return of the ever-fabulous wig. Every queen embraced her individual style, with some opting for extravagant ball gowns and others for tight leather jumpsuits. One thing's for sure - 2007 drag fashion had sass in spades!
Of course, we couldn't leave out the de rigeur pink tutu, the ultimate in glamorous attire, as you all know. This little gem added a hint of ballet magic to every outfit, turning ordinary looks into something truly spectacular. I just have to start the pink tutu movement and spread the word!
Making Dreams Happen: The Power of Drag
You know me - I adore a good show, but my time travel journey isn't just about the performances and fashion (although let's be honest, those are a major draw). It's also about celebrating the power of drag. In 2007, we witnessed the birth of some truly amazing drag queens - individuals who were transforming the world of entertainment with their wit, humor, and dazzling talent. These ladies weren't just performers - they were breaking barriers, challenging conventions, and giving voice to the voiceless.
Now, darling, I have to dash. You see, there's a whole new decade waiting for me to explore - 2008 - and let's just say there's a lot of fabulousness to unpack. Make sure you check back for next month's Pink Tutu Travels. Remember: keep twirling, keep sparkling, and keep wearing pink tutus!
Lots of love,
Emma www.pink-tutu.com
P.S I can't talk about drag queen history without talking about what I saw, oh darling, the fabulous fashion I saw! At Heaven, in London, Miss Fame was rocking a sequin dress that would make a queen swoon! I've already started thinking about designing one for my next performance in Derbyshire. That would really show them what a real Derbyshire queen looks like, with my very own pink tutu twist, of course! I may not have my pink tutu for the travel yet - a lot of drag queen money needs to go to that! But one day I'll have it!
P.P.S You can support me and my amazing travel ventures by visiting my shop on www.pink-tutu.com. It's packed full of pink tutu accessories, including hair clips and earrings, to give your outfit that extra oomph! Come on darlings - make your dreams a reality, wear a pink tutu, join the movement!
