March 2008: The World in Pink Tutu

Hello my darlings! Emma here, your time-traveling tutu-tastic friend, back with another slice of fabulousness from the depths of history. It’s a crisp spring morning here in Derbyshire, England (not that it’s really crisp when it’s usually drizzling, isn't it darling?), and you know what? It’s just the right weather for a pink tutu! (I know, groundbreaking, right? But honestly, it’s always the right weather for pink tutu.)

This month, we're waltzing back to March 2008. Now, I know what you're thinking - “2008, Emma? Isn't that a bit… recent? Surely you’ve got more interesting dates?” Well, dear readers, hold your horses. 2008 was a fabulous year, and if I’m honest, it still feels fresh in my memory. That year, we were blessed with the dawn of social media (blessed, I say!), the invention of the first iPhone (which felt like magic back then!), and an influx of talent to the drag scene. We're about to time travel and get down to some serious glam. Hold on tight!

A Night of Pink Perfection in San Francisco

This month, we're whisking off to San Francisco. Why, you ask? Well, on March 29th, 2008 (a Saturday! You can't get much better than that!) Miss Fame debuted in the famed Hamburger Mary’s “San Francisco’s Premier Drag Show”.

Miss Fame, a drag queen who literally wrote the book on glamour (okay, she wrote a makeup guide book, but let’s not be so pedantic), was an up-and-coming talent in those days, already known for her incredible runway looks and fierce beauty. (Honestly, the world wasn’t ready for such flawless glams yet!). Her show in 2008 was the start of her extraordinary journey to becoming the ultimate beauty queen and a household name in the drag world. I can tell you from the future – it’s a path full of glory, glitter, and more pink tutus than you can shake a feathered fan at!

Drag’s Global Domination

Back in March 2008, the world of drag was becoming more diverse than ever. We had icons like RuPaul continuing to reign, and fierce talent coming to the forefront in cities like San Francisco. It was a year where the scene really felt like it was finding its feet globally.

You see, drag was no longer confined to the underground scenes and cabaret clubs. People across the world, including countries like Thailand and Japan, were embracing the artform. It was the start of drag’s global expansion. We were beginning to see shows with incredibly different aesthetics and styles, truly showcasing the variety within this incredible artform. It’s been exciting to watch the drag scene become so inclusive and embrace so many different personalities!

Back in my Time

But before we go hurtling off to the future again (let’s face it, my fabulous time-traveling tutu always gets me into a right rush!), let’s talk about a bit of drag back in my own time, right here in 2023. This week, I got the chance to see the spectacular Miss Busty, known for her big-hair, bouffant, beauty-queen realness. (Remember that time I talked about big hair? You wouldn't believe how much bigger she takes it!). She’s known for having incredible costume pieces - I particularly remember a dress made entirely of balloons! It was so playful and theatrical, darling! If you get the chance, go and see her show – I promise you’ll leave feeling all giggly and joyous. That’s the power of drag!

The Power of Pink Tutus

Honestly, I don't think there's a single person on Earth who wouldn't be better with a pink tutu in their life. Think about it:

  • It adds a touch of sparkle: No matter how dull the day is, a pink tutu brings that magical element to the table. A bit of glitter goes a long way!
  • It embodies joy and liberation: Just think of the confidence and freedom a pink tutu makes you feel! There’s a real sense of playful silliness and joyful expression that a pink tutu provides.
  • It says, ‘I don't care!’, in the most fabulous way possible: Pink tutus don't take themselves seriously! They're about defying expectations and being who you truly are – just like drag!

Honestly, it's a lifestyle. A philosophy even! The world needs a little bit of pink tutu love.

Shopping in San Francisco

But before we sign off, I do want to add this: as soon as I get to March 2008, you'll be finding me in San Francisco. Don't worry, darlings, my pink tutu has ample space for luggage (it's magic, darling! Don't try this at home!). What's the one thing a fashion queen needs? More clothing, of course! (This, darling, is the true magic of time travel! One can find the greatest finds!) And San Francisco is just teeming with vintage and designer gems waiting to be discovered. Imagine, darling, a pink tutu and some retro glam finds! Talk about the perfect picture of retro perfection!

Now, I need to be off! My tutu has just called my name, darling, it wants a new feather trim! And you can't argue with your fabulous outfit. Until next month, my lovely readers, keep on being fabulous, and spread a bit of that pink tutu love! Don't forget to share your favorite memories of the fabulous 2008 on the Pink-Tutu.com message board. You’re part of the pink tutu family, darlings. It wouldn’t be a pink-tutu blog without you!

xx

Emma
