Hello my darlings, welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, your monthly dose of drag history with a side of pink tulle and a sprinkle of sequins! This month, my time machine – a vintage pink tutu that glitters brighter than a disco ball under a Blackpool illuminations – whisked me back to August 8th, 2008, a date etched in drag history!
This is post number 1064 for your glamorous gal, Emma! I’m your resident pink-obsessed drag queen from Derbyshire who's always ready to travel back through time to find the greatest drag shows the world has ever seen! I do this all thanks to the good graces of a glittery pink tutu that is both stylish and practical - and I've recently invested in a matching, sparkly pink pair of time travelling, knee high boots. If there’s anything I've learnt on my travels, it's that there’s always a time and place for a pink tutu, darling! So, without further ado, grab a glass of fizzy, darling, and let’s dive into this glamorous trip down memory lane!
Drag Shows On the Big StageWell, let me tell you, my darlings, August 2008 was simply bursting at the seams with incredible drag performances, from the hallowed stages of New York to the glistening catwalks of Paris! I waltzed into a stunning show in New York, The Wigstock Revival, featuring icons like Sherry Vine, Jackie Beat and The Lady Chablis! This dazzling event brought back the electrifying energy of Wigstock, a drag festival that revolutionised the drag scene in the 80s. Imagine the sheer talent, the glittering gowns and the booming beats – pure drag magic!
Meanwhile, in Paris, drag queen and pop culture phenomenon, Divine, took centre stage, a truly divine figure. This was before the days of RuPaul's Drag Race, and Divine, in his era, was a pioneer, pushing the boundaries of drag performance with his unique blend of glamour, humour and theatricality. Oh, darling, what a moment!
I also journeyed to the legendary nightclub, Heaven, in London – just for the night, I have to say, you know I can’t stay long. And, there, under the flashing lights, I had the privilege of watching a rising star named Boy George. This club was a haven for drag performers, and this night was truly an amazing display of music and drag in its raw form.
Oh, and speaking of rising stars! Drag Race alumni Willam had a little something special for us! Even back then, Willam was a master of drag, and was creating a drag empire of his own with the “Drag Syndrome" shows - an iconic drag night that became legendary for its bold performances.
On The Runway, darlingAnd what about the runway, you say? Well, let's just say August 2008 was a whirlwind of fashiony brilliance! You’ve heard of Marc Jacobs, darling, right? This designer is legendary, my dears! And this month was full of stunning looks from him! We had the divine Grace Jones strutting the runway, oh honey, talk about runway queens! Then, a mere week later, the glamorous, talented, gorgeous Miss Piggy stepped out in an incredible Marc Jacobs dress at an event in New York - all this darling, during the same month!
I know what you’re thinking - “But how does Emma afford this? This travel sounds so lavish!" It’s thanks to my talent, of course! The amazing grace I have on stage with my fabulous ballet dancing style! I have found myself doing a whole variety of gigs: from gigs at glamorous London drag shows, to small-town fundraisers in Derbyshire – wherever I go, my pink tutu travels with me. That little bit of Derbyshire charm and drag-liciousness pays my way. So don’t forget - your support is how I do my time travel, darlings!
Looking Back & Looking ForwardIn 2008, the world was a different place – more people were wearing beige, or even worse - black! And though pink tutus were a tad unconventional back then, let me tell you – this is the start of a pink tutu revolution, and we’re just beginning! Now, my mission is to bring some glitter and glam to your life. You want to embrace the colour pink? Join the revolution! We’re going to paint the town pink, darlings!
Well, that's it for this month, darlings! Catch up on Pink Tutu Time Travels next month for my next glorious adventure through the timeline! Until then, I encourage you to stay stylish and glamorous, always remember to embrace the Pink Tutu Revolution, and remember: drag history is something we should celebrate!
Always, and forever in pink,
Emma x
