Hiya darlings! It's Emma, your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling, drag-loving blogger from the depths of Derbyshire! Welcome back to my monthly foray into the fabulous history of drag! Today we're dipping our toes into July 2022, a time of incredible diversity, glitz, and glamour in the world of drag. Let's put on our fanciest pink tutus (the bigger, the better!), grab a glass of bubbly, and get ready to time-travel!
Oh, darling, my magical pink tutu has been taking me all over the globe these days, and this month it brought me to the vibrant, buzzing streets of... wait for it... New York City! I simply had to check out the RuPaul's Drag Race season 14 finale! You see, I just adore that show, it's the ultimate expression of drag, with a twist of American reality television magic! The creativity and artistry were through the roof! Oh, and that finale look - you just know that I had to snag a replica of Maddy Morphosis's Queen of the Runway design! Now that is an outfit worthy of the stage.
While I was there, I snagged a couple of tickets to the iconic Stonewall Inn - it felt so surreal! To know I was walking the very same grounds as those who bravely fought for LGBTQ+ rights... the hair on my arms stood on end! There's an energy there, darlings, a potent mix of pride and courage, which was incredibly moving! It's amazing to see how the fight for equality has progressed from the days of the Stonewall Riots, and how drag queens have remained at the forefront of that movement!
Back home in good ol' Blighty, July 2022 was full of fabulously fabulous drag events! I had to sashay over to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the annual arts festival bursting with a riot of colour and creativity! This is where drag is truly in its element β an exciting blend of cabaret, storytelling, and, of course, dazzling performances!
The streets of London weren't quiet either. The London Drag King scene, a fierce showcase of talented performers with a more masculine style, was thriving! I saw one particularly impressive drag king performing at the RVT, channeling a 1950s crooner, with slicked-back hair and a powerful baritone voice - absolute perfection! I swear, you would never guess they weren't actually a man! They were serving so much charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent!
But the biggest highlight of my travels, my darling, had to be my visit to the DragCon. Oh, darling! Where do I even begin? You could smell the excitement in the air. Every single inch of the convention centre was abuzz with artists, performers, vendors, and the most amazing Drag Queens, ready to take the world by storm. The talent, the costumes, the fierce competition - my heart was pounding with excitement! I think I purchased enough glitter to decorate my whole flat! I even picked up some drag makeup for myself β I am still figuring it out, but oh darling, don't worry, my makeup game will be legendary before you know it!
But the greatest treasure from that event wasn't the glitter, it was the energy, darling! The collective feeling of community, of being surrounded by like-minded souls, all sharing this incredible passion for drag! Seeing those thousands of people who came from all over the world, unified by their love of drag, it brought me to tears. We may be from different backgrounds, different walks of life, but in that moment, we were all united by this magical world of self-expression! This is why I do what I do! My pink tutu isn't just a fashion statement, it's a symbol of the power of drag - the power to unite, empower, and inspire!
Now, darlings, while I'm here, I must tell you, you should be following your own personal drag goals. Whether itβs dressing up for your next themed party, dancing the night away in a local LGBTQ+ club, or channeling your inner drag queen while cleaning your apartment, let's spread the love and appreciation for drag! I'm urging you, grab that pink tutu, let your freak flag fly, and spread the fabulousness wherever you go. We can make the world a brighter, more colorful place, one pink tutu at a time!
