Hello darlings! It's your favourite Derbyshire lass, Emma, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, your one-stop shop for all things fabulous and time-travelling! This month, I'm taking you back to a glorious decade: the fabulous 80s, to be precise! Specifically, March 1986, and let me tell you, it's a wild ride. Buckle up, my dears!
It all started as a normal, albeit flamboyant, day in my beloved Derbyshire. I was at my local thrift store, scooping up another pile of pink tulle (it's practically a religion!), when I stumbled upon a peculiar sequined vest. It was covered in shimmering silver stars and boasted an inscription: "To the Future!". My heart fluttered with anticipation. Could it be a magical garment with the power to travel through time?
Now, I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and fate clearly had other plans for my humble pink tutu. With a dramatic twirl and a prayer to the Drag Goddesses, I slipped it on, and in a flash of pink glitter, I found myself transported!
Welcome to the Eighties: Where Pink is King!
Landing in New York City's iconic West Village, my senses were immediately overwhelmed. The air buzzed with electric energy, a glorious symphony of neon lights, pulsating synth music, and the exhilarating rush of leather jackets and outrageous hairstyles! Oh my goodness! This era had "fabulous" down to a fine art.
The heart of the scene was at the Pyramid Club, a haven for drag queens where the iconic underground performance art movement, known as "performance art," was in full swing. It was like stepping onto a stage of dreams!
I could barely believe my eyes as I watched drag queens like the legendary Divine, known for their outlandish performances and rebellious attitude, dominate the stage. They were true pioneers, pushing the boundaries of art and expression!
And let's not forget Holly Woodlawn, a legendary drag queen and transgender activist who stole the spotlight in John Waters’ films. Their powerful presence was an inspiration to generations of drag performers. The energy was intoxicating. These queens were living, breathing masterpieces.
Shopping with the Stars: Drag, Style & Sparkle
My next stop? Naturally, the most flamboyant, decadent store on Fifth Avenue! The infamous Fashion Moda store, a playground for bold avant-garde fashion, where artistic expression and creative freedom reigned supreme. You could practically feel the glitter vibrating through the air!
The vibrant clothing, bold accessories, and daring looks of the early eighties were a real eye-opener, a fascinating journey through the intersection of fashion and art. Everything was daring, oversized, and dripping with sparkle. Even their hairspray was probably heavier than my usual make-up bag!
The store’s walls were plastered with images of some of the most influential figures in the scene, showcasing their stunning and flamboyant outfits: the glamorous Leigh Bowery, the daring Andy Warhol and his "Superstars" who pushed the boundaries of performance, and the visionary designer, Vivienne Westwood. All of them were so stylish, daring, and unforgettable!
More Than a Stage: A Cultural Revolution
It's fascinating to witness the 1980s in full force: an era of bold expression, creativity and individuality. But it was also an era when LGBTQ+ communities fought hard for acceptance and recognition.
From the groundbreaking performance of “The Queen’s Secret” at the Pyramid Club, which challenged social norms and advocated for greater LGBTQ+ visibility, to the establishment of support groups for AIDS victims, it was a time of great upheaval and incredible bravery.
The eighties marked a crucial chapter in drag queen history, a time when a sense of community and advocacy played a central role in propelling drag culture into the limelight. And while there is still much work to be done, these incredible performers paved the way for us all.
Bringing the 80s to 2026
I've learned a lot from this time travel, and I hope you have too! The eighties was an era brimming with artistic expression, a wild time when creativity ran rampant, and individuals were celebrated for their individuality. As always, we learn so much about today by taking a look at the past, seeing how our beloved queens before us shaped the world we know today.
So, darlings, let’s raise a glass of something pink and sparkly to the trailblazers of the eighties! As for me, I’ll be busy hunting for more pink tulle (because there's never enough, right?) and dreaming of my next time-traveling adventure!
Remember to stay fabulous, my dears, and until next time, keep those pink tutus twirling!
Yours in sparkle,
Emma xoxo
