Hello darlings! Emma here, your pink-tutu-wearing time-traveling friend, back with another installment from my whirlwind tour of drag history! I'm in a particularly celebratory mood today, having just witnessed the most fabulous event – a glitzy gala in 2046, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Drag Alliance (IDA)! Honestly, it was the most wonderful thing I've ever seen!
Remember, darling, every month I slip into my magical time-traveling pink tutu and I'm off to experience some fab drag history. My pink tutu allows me to journey back in time, just as I can hop forward, which comes in super handy when I want a glimpse of the future. I think my adventures will continue to inspire every drag queen across the globe - that's my mission: get everyone rocking a pink tutu! After all, a bit of pink never hurt anyone, it's practically the essence of fab!
But before we get into the IDA festivities, let's take a peek at what the world of drag looked like back in 2046! This was a time when drag had become mainstream - I'm talking Drag Race on every streaming platform imaginable, drag-themed theme parks in Las Vegas (all sponsored by my pink tutu-themed clothing line, of course!), and the mainstream music charts full of fabulous drag artists! What a time to be alive, right?
Okay, let’s talk about this incredible IDA gala, shall we? This prestigious gathering celebrated a century of the International Drag Alliance, which has fought tooth and nail for drag recognition and representation around the globe!
It was absolutely dripping with fabulousness, darlings. Imagine, a hundred of the most incredible drag performers from across the globe all gathered together for a glorious celebration of all things drag. The atmosphere was positively electric with anticipation!
Now, the IDA was founded in 2046 by the iconic, and very stylish, Mother Divine. A true drag pioneer! She was known for her vibrant green wig, fierce fashion choices, and inspiring speeches. But honestly, the gala itself felt like an entire celebration of everything that came after - and we're talking over a hundred years of drag history, people!
One highlight for me was seeing this phenomenal show called "A Century of Glamour" put on by the IDA Youth Drag Collective, a bunch of super talented young queens making their mark on the world of drag. The show explored a century of drag through music, fashion, and spoken word! Honestly, the creativity was through the roof, they really nailed every era from 1940s drag, 70s disco to 2000s runway queen and everything in-between. The way they captured the history and energy of different periods in a single performance was astounding! It made me super proud to be a drag queen and I couldn't help but burst into a round of applause, my pink tutu a little ruffled from all the dancing!
Another event at the gala was the Drag Legend Awards, celebrating those iconic individuals who have changed the game, made the impossible possible and shown us all what drag is truly about. This wasn't just about fabulous outfits and performance, but the grit and passion behind the artform!
From pioneers in the early years of drag who battled for acceptance, to contemporary queens who are constantly pushing boundaries and redefining what it means to be a drag queen - these awards were a fantastic way to remember all the individuals who have shaped the vibrant tapestry of drag that we all enjoy today!
As always, I had my camera glued to my hand (it’s actually a vintage Polaroid, you know! It’s a time traveler's essential!) snapping photos for my time travel journal - I love those gorgeous, old Polaroid pics! My darling followers were definitely going to be treated to some very glamorous shots on my www.pink-tutu.com blog!
A word about the fashion, darlings. Well, the whole event felt like one big drag show! The queens went all out and there was absolutely no shortage of glitter, feather boas, sequins, and yes, a healthy dose of pink, of course! There was an enormous emphasis on creativity and expression. One particular queen, with a dramatic blue and green feathered ensemble, did a performance that involved levitating across the stage. Yes, darling! Levitating! She made her entrance by actually floating across the stage in a pink light. So avant-garde, and very reminiscent of the space age themed looks back in the early 2030s. The looks, the styles, the makeup...everything was on point!
The gala dinner was fantastic - lots of laughs and delicious cocktails. And there was a wonderful dessert buffet with the most amazing drag-themed cupcakes and a seriously amazing cake. One that, whispers, involved some deliciously surprising interactive magic tricks! All fueled by fabulous cocktails - because we love a good boozy night, right? I'm talking everything from shimmering lavender Martinis to neon-green jello shots, perfect for some late-night fun!
Now, to end my blog this month, I'll talk a little about myself and my very own little journey back in time. You're going to love this... the reason I could even be there at all, was because a huge international drag event was taking place in Derbyshire, England, where I hail from. A sort of festival with drag performances happening all over the city. You know, we have a history of making amazing performers and creatives right here in Derbyshire - I mean, we had one of the very first drag houses here. There were so many drag artists of all genres on stage across the entire region for this one particular weekend!
My favourite show was an interactive cabaret-style event at the fabulous Palace Theatre - oh, I love a bit of drag theatre! A dazzling performance by some phenomenal drag performers from all over the world. There was music, singing, laughter and of course, stunning costume changes! But the audience wasn't just a spectator; the queens would come down from the stage, invite everyone to sing along, dance together and just really be a part of the show. Honestly, the joy of it all filled me to the brim with such pride in the power of drag! It was then I realised what my life purpose was... To bring some glitter and joy to the world by showcasing the power and history of drag.
Well darlings, it's time for me to go, as my next adventure is waiting for me. I can't share much, but I will say this - It involves feathers and glitter-bombs. Keep an eye out for next month’s post as I travel to 2068!
Until next time, darlings, remember - always wear your pink tutu with pride and keep dancing, you glorious things!
All the best, Emma x
