Hello darling divas and dashing drag kings! It’s Emma here, your resident time-traveling ballerina extraordinaire, ready to whisk you away on another fabulous journey through drag history! Buckle your diamante straps, and hold onto your fabulous wigs, because this month we’re landing right smack-dab in the middle of 2047!
You won’t believe this, but my trusty pink tutu landed me smack bang in the middle of… drum roll please… DRAG CONVENTION 2047! Oh honey, let me tell you, this convention was pure magic!
It's a bit of a blur, frankly, what with all the sequins and glitter bouncing off my tulle. But the main takeaway? Drag has gone GLOBAL, my darlings! We're talking international collaborations, a booming scene in every continent, even a dedicated space station for celestial drag shows! The future is certainly looking bright and colourful!
Now, back to Drag Con 2047. I walked into a shimmering cathedral of drag, draped with sparkling fabrics and dripping in neon light. I could see queens from every corner of the world - Tokyo's cyber-drag fashionistas in futuristic looks, Kenyan queens channeling the spirit of traditional Masai garb, and a whole gaggle of glittery bears from Finland performing a joyous version of "Grease Lightning"! The air thrummed with an electricity I'd never felt before!
I had a little tea with some amazing queens. Meet 'Dragaloop', an amazing transgender ballerina queen from California whose looks involved incorporating LED lights and motion capture technology! Her performances were spectacular, especially a modern, yet moving interpretation of the Black Swan’s 'death' scene - genius! Then there was 'The Queen of Cairo', who served us Middle Eastern drag glamour with belly-dancing skills that had everyone cheering!
The big news at the convention was the launch of "Drag Global", a platform dedicated to uniting the international drag community. Imagine, a virtual space where queens from across the world could share stories, exchange ideas, and build relationships - it was truly a revolutionary step in drag history!
I caught a glimpse of what was on offer in this glorious future, my dear loves. Some trends that stood out included…
Digital drag: Oh honey, drag makeup reached another level! Think custom 3D makeup looks, avatars designed for the metaverse, and live face-swapping with other drag artists - the possibilities seemed endless!
Gender fluid fashion: The boundaries between ‘male’ and ‘female’ clothing have completely dissolved in the world of 2047 drag! The outfits I saw ranged from hyper-masculine suits that incorporated feathers and rhinestones to feminine dresses adorned with studs and safety pins - it was utterly captivating!
Sustainability: 2047 drag queens have truly embraced the importance of being kind to our planet. Upcycled costumes, recycled fabrics, and plant-based makeup were common throughout the convention. It truly felt good to see sustainability taking centre stage!
After a whirlwind weekend of drag fashion, make-up workshops and a fiery lip sync competition, I found myself in a beautiful, pink-hued alleyway. It was there I met ‘Twinkletoes’, a drag queen and ballet dancer from my hometown of Derbyshire, England! Can you imagine our delight?
Twinkletoes told me how her passion for both drag and ballet led her to the heart of Drag Global! Now, she's performing with a talented company, “Ballet de Drag," using the power of ballet and drag to champion LGBTQIA+ stories and visibility.
It’s so heartwarming to see drag, my dearest divas, taking the stage, literally, on a global scale!
And you know what, after meeting Twinkletoes, my tutu twitched with an exciting idea! Maybe this is my chance to truly bring drag and ballet together! Why not have a ‘Pink Tutu’ themed drag show with some ballet elements back in good old Derbyshire?!
Now that’s an idea I simply can’t wait to get started on, my darling loves.
Of course, what is a trip to 2047 without shopping? I went to the 'Glowy Glamazon' fashion store to pick up the brightest pink sparkly platform boots I had ever seen (so glad my tutu took a detour to 2047 just to bring these beauties home!).
Keep those tutus twirling and your mascara smudged, lovelies, I’ll be back soon with more thrilling drag adventures!
Remember, if you have a question or a pink tutu story you’d love to share, hit up the comments section. Until then, be fabulous, be bold, and be unapologetically you!
Yours in sequins and smiles,
Emma xx
