Hiya darlings! Itās Emma, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu wearing drag queen blogger. Todayās journey, oh my gosh, take a deep breath⦠twirls and sparkles 2054, January the first! Can you even believe it? My magical pink tutu whisked me off to a world full of glitter and chrome and whew is it fab! But, before I get ahead of myself, letās have a spot of tea, shall we? (Thatās a Brit thing, darling).
Right then, so, 2054! Like I said, a year in the future! Who knew I'd be zipping through time like a sequined rocket, all thanks to my favourite tutu (you know the one - itās the one with the extra puff and the sparkle, divine). The world, dear readers, was positively overflowing with the most dazzling drag shows I've ever encountered! Itās almost too much! Where to begin?!
I have to tell you about this spectacular Drag-verse they've got going on over in Tokyo, Japan. Shimmering, gorgeous! A whole multi-dimensional universe built from drag history - imagine, from the House of Chanel, from 1909, all the way up to this 2054. You can teleport around to different periods in drag history as different characters - amazing, darling. Oh! There was this show I saw⦠the sheer artistry of it - I swear a queen literally disappeared from one century to the next poof, the audience erupted with applause, truly astounding. This time travelling was definitely on another level, darling, mind blowing! Itās so beautifully inclusive. Even the most forgotten drag queens, even from the past centuries have their place here in this Drag-verse. I tell you, *it makes me want to go back to Tokyo and experience it all again! *
I donāt even know how many times I gasped with amazement during my travels around the globe. Remember all those gorgeous vintage clothes from the early 20th century that inspired our drag family today? They are having their own kind of comeback! Every queen, every King, in this period 2054 has adopted the glam looks from previous drag periods as inspiration. Everything's infused with retro glam! It was just... perfection. It's a real fashion fiesta! And the talent - oooh don't even get me started. I met this queen, "Phoenix," she was performing at this amazing club in New York City called the 'Chrome Dream', I felt like I was in a future wonderland of pure fabulousness! Imagine all the drag superstars of today; they were all performing and showcasing, oh, darling it was truly a marvel. She'd take on multiple persona throughout the evening, so inspiring, moving effortlessly through different styles, a pure dream for the eyes! The way she moved! Her costumes! Absolutely show-stopping.
Speaking of New York City⦠the street fashion there was incredible. People strutted with an outrageous confidence that just oozed charm and glitter! Imagine⦠like drag balls, only all the time! All the time! Think rainbow coloured clothing that shifted its hues, shimmery, sparkling shoes that projected little mini shows on the ground! Even the street performers had this fantastical and whimsical feel to them. Everything had such character. Oh, I need to stop right here! Otherwise I shall tell you of all my encounters in New York. Let's not get lost in the dazzling details... though maybe next time!
I simply have to share this bit of info though⦠(itās such a little nugget of brillianceā¦): Every single place in 2054 offered a drag class⦠in schools. Imagine, kids going to drag classes just as an extension of performing arts in every school in the world! It's revolutionary, just goes to show the world was opening its mind up to beauty and inclusion, that even our darling children were embracing this magic! The young girls, wearing brightly coloured tutus! Absolutely, gorgeous. And not only were tutus big, you just wouldnāt believe what a comeback ballet was having! It really makes my pink heart skip a beat!. So fabulous! Oh darling, we need to embrace the glam! Every last ounce of it. (Oh darling⦠whisper-whisper It's going to become huge by the 2070āsā¦. *just you wait!)
I did have a funny encounter though! I popped into a little vintage clothing store in Nottingham and there it was, on a stand⦠the dress⦠It was that perfect shimmering lilac cocktail number with the extra, extra, huge, gigantic pouf and the matching handbag that made all the queens jealous. It was beautiful, beautiful, gorgeous - the most glamorous thing in the entire store! (My vintage, girly side loves this kind of thing, darling. Can you believe a dress from 1930 is considered vintage now. Squeal! ). Imagine if this dress was ever able to speak, oh the secrets, the memories. The fabulous nights it could tell us about! Imagine it dancing in that old Hollywood era with some drag superstar. I couldn't help myself⦠I gave it a little twirl⦠you know, just to see if it fit (because of course it did!) and all of a sudden, the most beautiful queen from another century materialised from the clothing! She even had the most dazzling feather boas and shimmering headwear imaginable! I mean the look completely screamed ā1930s Hollywoodā and letās face it, who doesn't love a good feather boa?! The manager of the store went pale. Imagine! I did make an appointment to have a special look through the rest of the clothing collection though - who wouldnāt?!
This all brought me back to thinking about the power of clothing in drag. Iād like to take a moment here and celebrate how this magical garment can bring us all together, as if we all need an extra helping of fabulousness. And speaking of glamorous⦠did you see the drag street shows? Imagine an array of sequins, glitter, feather boas⦠You just canāt imagine this kind of spectacle darling. My favourite spot? Well, in Berlin⦠where else⦠There were queens in glittering, shimmering robes, their face masks sparkling, performing in this incredible underwater setting⦠there were bubble shows and holographic displays all happening under a sparkling waterfall. It was breathtaking and beyond glamorous - I honestly couldnāt believe how talented these queens were. The talent of today, just never ceases to amaze me⦠always. (Donāt even get me started about the gorgeous tutus... ooh la la. I think they have found the perfect material! Like a shimmering liquid, gorgeous! But darling... whereās that tea? This travelling is quite tiring. It's been one crazy and amazing experience - I know weāll all be seeing the 2054 influences trickle through the drag shows in 2060, for sure! Donāt you agree, darling? (Yes, darling, I do.)
Keep on following our time-travelling journey at www.pink-tutu.com . The month of February brings a whole new dimension of surprises, darling. And keep twirling! Until next time, have a super duper time!
Much love, Emma
