Greetings from your favourite Derbyshire darling, Emma, back with another time-hopping tale from the archives of my pink tutu.
This month, we're waltzing back to the 12th of December, 2054. It's a bit of a blur, even for my time-traveling brain, because you see, this particular journey was more of a whirl, a whirlwind, a pink-tutu twirl of excitement, if you will!
Imagine, if you will, a dazzling futuristic metropolis where skyscrapers are crafted from glowing amethyst, and self-driving cars hum by like neon hummingbirds. That's where my sparkly pink tulle took me. But the real glitz and glamour weren't just in the futuristic landscape. They were in the vibrant, breathtaking drag scene. Oh darling, it was absolutely fabulous!
I mean, where else in history would you find an all-female, all-non-binary drag competition for "Queen of the Holodeck" hosted in the middle of a gigantic holographic space station? You guessed it: 2054! These talented queens sashayed across digital stages, serving sci-fi glam with a sprinkle of interstellar realness, and you know I was glued to the screen (with my very own futuristic pair of 3D, holographic spectacles, naturally!).
The fashion? Darling, the fashion! They had gowns made from recycled constellations, wigs fashioned from iridescent algae, and even holographic, 3D makeup that looked as though it was painted on with a sprinkle of fairy dust! They looked like walking, talking works of art, and my pink tutu positively swirled with envy.
Let's talk about the queen who won my heart - "Nova Neutron" - a breathtaking beauty in metallic silver and gold. Her drag style? Imagine a celestial superhero who also just happened to slay a catwalk. Her lips were painted in holographic nebulae patterns, her eyes were outlined with shimmery, holographic constellations, and she served ethereal vibes that could have single-handedly powered a city.
My goodness, this Queen was the epitome of fierce femininity, futuristic futurism, and fabulosity! She made me long for holographic wings, for shimmering cosmic glitter, for a lifetime of futuristic elegance.
But letβs rewind a bit. To understand the fabulousity of 2054's drag scene, you have to acknowledge that we wouldn't be here without the generations of fabulous queens who came before. Remember the pioneering pioneers of drag like insert famous drag queens who were active in the early 2000s-2050s (choose five or six and give a brief bio about each), who paved the way for drag as an art form, for the acceptance of LGBTQIA+ rights, for pushing boundaries, for giving a voice to the voiceless.
I'm standing on their shoulders, in my pink tutu, embracing the legacies of these pioneers of our community. Their trailblazing stories continue to inspire drag queens today.
As for the scene back then, beyond "Queen of the Holodeck" - 2054 had so much more to offer! Mention different drag styles or genres (holographic drag, cyber punk drag, virtual reality drag etc.) and what shows were on, the history of those shows You couldn't swing a holographic sequined handbag without hitting a drag brunch, a drag queen karaoke night, or a drag opera! The creativity of these queens, their resilience, their constant push for inclusivity, their dedication to expressing their truths through drag, it simply blew me away.
I have to confess, seeing the futuristic glamour of 2054 made me re-evaluate my own drag fashion choices. Would the holographic make-up, recycled-constellation gowns, and futuristic, neon-tinged looks be the future of drag? Or are we, as drag queens, destined to be constantly evolving with time, reinventing ourselves, serving something new every day?
The answer, of course, lies somewhere between, embracing tradition while forging our own path. It's all about staying true to ourselves, but also, like the phenomenal queens of 2054, constantly exploring new artistic horizons!
*I, for one, can't wait to see what future adventures await! *
Until next time, my dears, stay fabulous! Remember, never be afraid to dream in pink, to twirl in tulle, and to embrace your inner queen, no matter what year, what time, what universe you happen to find yourself in!
XOXO, Emma * www.pink-tutu.com *
