Greetings, darlings! Emma here, your fabulous guide to the glittery history of drag! 💅💋
This month, I'm taking you on a thrilling trip back to March 2059, a date that practically vibrates with queer energy! It's a time when drag has truly blossomed into a global phenomenon, celebrated across continents and cultures, and trust me, you wouldn't believe the fashion!
(It goes without saying that, for my time travels, my trusty pink tutu remains the most fabulous and practical means of transportation. Think of it as a magical garment for time travellers - the more pink, the faster the trip! Plus, you just can't beat a good pink tutu for glamour. Pink is my happy place, and that's a truth that transcends time!😉)
So, what's sizzling in the world of drag on this very special March day in 2059? Well, let me tell you…
From the bustling streets of London's West End to the pulsating clubs of Tokyo, drag has taken over the entertainment scene. And you know what that means? 🤑 Shopping, darlings! The high street is a haven for fabulous fashion! ✨ I'm talking sparkly jumpsuits that make you feel like a disco ball, capes that could rival the Great Wall of China in length, and enough sequins to dazzle even the dullest day. It's a drag queen's dream come true!
In New York City, The Metropolitan Opera is presenting a spectacular reimagining of “La Bohème,” starring the iconic drag queen sensation, "Phoenix Feather," a darling of the digital age known for their captivating blend of avant-garde and ethereal artistry. This rendition has even got a pink feather theme, which, darling, makes my heart flutter! I just adore the theatrical power of opera combined with the flamboyance of drag - it's a marriage made in heaven! 💖 Just thinking about the glorious gowns and the dazzling costumes sends shivers down my spine! My little pink tutu can’t help but jig with excitement.
And over in Melbourne, Australia, a street drag festival is turning the city's heart into a massive, rainbow-filled dance floor. From campy, sassy, comedy queen routines, to high-octane vogue performances, to the sweet sounds of lip sync battles, the streets are pulsating with talent and joyous energy. Talk about an atmosphere for showing off your latest pink tutu and letting those sequins do their thing! I wouldn’t miss this for the world! 🤸♀️
I was also absolutely tickled pink to find myself attending a truly dazzling showcase at the Musée du Louvre in Paris! They have this spectacular exhibition showcasing drag throughout history. Talk about fabulous history lessons, darling! Not only did they have displays from legendary drag performers like the fabulous Lady Chablis, but they also displayed costumes from ancient drag performance in different cultures and eras. There's even a recreated drag ball from the late 1980s in New York - the glitter is blinding! ✨ I managed to get a peek at some breathtaking original pieces from the early days of drag. You could almost hear the screams of the audience ringing through the galleries! 🤩 And, you betcha, they've got a fabulous display of all the best pink tutu trends over the decades, my favourite being a collection of tulle-tastic outfits from the 1960s. I may have actually gasped out loud in the museum – quite a bit louder than the museum security guard liked! 😂
As for the world of drag performance today, darling, the diversity and inclusivity are truly awe-inspiring. Across the world, we have the LGBTQ+ community embracing drag artists from every background, gender identity, race, and style. From the comedic stylings of "Fluffy Bearded Mama," to the elegant beauty of "Glitter Glam," to the dynamic "Urban Warrior Queen," each artist contributes to the ever-growing tapestry of drag artistry. Every queen deserves a spot on the stage, showing off their own individual flair! 💪🏼
Of course, a big shout-out goes to the brilliant minds behind drag makeup. From the contouring that could make Michelangelo envious, to the eyeshadow blending skills that rival Picasso himself, they are artists of a different breed. They are true masters of their craft, able to create looks that range from elegant and refined to outrageous and extravagant. You name it, they've done it!💄💋 In fact, darling, there is a whole subculture of Drag Make-Up Academy students everywhere. Just seeing those eager young drag hopefuls fills my pink tutu with joy! 😊
What I find most beautiful about this era is how drag has moved beyond the traditional clubs and bars. It has found its way into the hearts and minds of the public, becoming an important cultural force. I can’t think of any more inspiring place to find my drag performance outfits for my time travelling journey than among this crowd, darling! 😊 That said, there’s no place better to discover and practice the art of fabulous outfits than on the dance floors of clubs like the legendary “Pink Paradise” in Los Angeles, which has a monthly ‘Pink Tutu’ themed drag night – every performer rocks a variation of the glorious pink tutu - what a blast! 🤯 The energy in there is unbelievable. But remember, safety first! Wear your sequins, your confidence, and your fabulous pink tutu – but please, do remember to look after yourselves, stay hydrated and know your limits! 💗✨
(Now, you might be wondering, where does Emma, a simple girl from Derbyshire, find the means for her extravagant travels through time? It’s quite simple: I make a living with my art! 💫 That's right, my dears, I travel through time, showcasing fabulous performances in drag at theatres, festivals, and even local village halls. I am, after all, an entertainer at heart. I think a good drag show should always end with the audience screaming with laughter or covered in glitter. 😉)
**But what about YOU, my dearest readers? What kind of drag journey would you embark on if you could? 🤔 Where would your pink tutu take you? Who are your drag idols? Which queens would you see perform? Remember, the beauty of drag is its boundless potential for creativity and self-expression. Every one of you is a star, waiting to be discovered! ✨
Until next time, may your days be filled with laughter, glitter, and a dash of fabulousness!
Much love,
Emma (of the fabulous Pink Tutu)
(And remember, every day is a great day for wearing pink!) 💗
